Anyone built Brodak FW-190?
« on: January 09, 2017, 03:21:03 PM »
Copy off the Hurricane thread.

This kit has caught my eye. Anyone ever built or flown it?

I've built this one although I did change a few things. I made carved wing tips and did not do full span flaps. I like the look of carved wing tips and the FW 190 did not have full span flaps. It was a die-cut kit !!!

I flew the prototype. Mike Garmon did the plans for the Warbird series for John Brodak. The local club members got involved with Mike while he was designing the Warbird series. The wing was the same for each model except for the wing-tips. I like building and flying all of the Warbird series. We still have a few of the models here in Norfolk Aeromodelers club. They all fly great.

You could always do a captured FW-190 ...

Use the German crosses on the wing and ditch the swastikas on the tail. That's acceptable even here on the left coast and the model will still have the authentic badaxe look of a German fighter. FWIW: I bought an FW-190 from Brodak, hard to pass  up as they are on sale. Wood was EXCELLENT, light straight,  better than I expected it to be. It will be the third Brodak Warbird I have made, the Mustang and Zero being the other two. Liked 'em both but the Zero is the better flier of the two. I have flown them with an FP-35, 40, LA-46, OS 35S, and Brodak 40. The B-40 is the best IMHO. Both have been flown in contests and the Zero won Profile Stunt at a contest last year. Highly recommended.  8)

Hi Pete,

I did build the prototype Zero for Mike Garmon.  One of, if not the best, profile I have flown.  I built it out of great wood and used an excellent OS .35S for power.  There were a few times that I flew it in Advanced as well as Profile class.  I had a small problem (all my fault) with it at Norfolk one day and have had to build a new wing.  It will be in the air again soon. :)

I now have the FW-190 Brodak kit.  I have always liked the FW 190A and I plan to put a good finish on it.  I am asking about the power you would recommend.  I loved the Zero with the .35S!  Bill Hummel can speak about the engine runs and flight capabilities of that one.  So you seem to recommend the Brodak .40 as the power to use??  I have one but not much experience with it.  Can you give your set up for it considering the FW 190?  I would appreciate it!

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill, my set up is a well broken in B-40, stock muffler, .285 venture from Jim Lee, Bolly Clubman 10.5x5 prop, 4 ounce tank w/ adjustable mount, Powermaster 10/22. Launch RPM is about 9,800 and engine holds a solid 4 stroke throughout the pattern. Another prop I have tried is the APC 10.5x5 which worked OK at a higher RPM. Currently have a 12x4 Bolly 3 blade narrow cut down to 10". Waiting for it to stop raining for test flights. 8)

Just finished a Brodak Focke Wulf bought on sale from Brodak's.  It's all monokote.  Just have to fit the leadout eyelets.

Looks great!!!!. I need to snatch one up before its back to double the price.

Got the 109 from a member here that is suppose to be on the bench next but I just got the P-51B for more than half the price Brodak lists it... so its a toss up as to which will be built first...

The 190 looks great and it should fly as great as the rest of the warbird series. H^^

Focke-Wulf 190-A is one of my favorite planes but, my neighborhood is about 50/50 right now so, not a good idea to go flashing swastikas around and they just don't look the same without them.

Lots of choices: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focke-Wulf_Fw_190#Operators

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Hi All, I am the current owner of the FW 190 which John Tate mentioned above. The original builder and owner , Willis Swindell now deceased, gave it to me in the fall of 1997. I've flown it very hard and very often and it still performs quite well! As to engines mounted it started out with a K & B .40 from Brodak back in the day, went on to FP .40's and Tower .40's, even an OS .48 4C which caused the stab to break on a hard reverse wingover! I am now flying it with an LA .46 on muffler pressure using a Zinger 11 X 5 prop and 10 11 11 fuel with the 10 being nitro methane. This set up has been the very best of all. Plane has had leather fillets added and has been flown many hundreds of flights! It is a winner!

On the other hand I also have a "Brodak" Stuka made by the same late friend which is a morfed Zero of the warbird series! It too is powered by an LA .46 and flies much better imho than the FW 190! Same engine and other items as the previously mentioned plane! It too has had leather fillets added to the front end to add stiffness to the engine runs and durability.
