ACHTUNG Spitfire .
« on: February 05, 2017, 05:11:18 AM »

Not a bad read , if a bit long winded . Griffon ( Big Block ) Spitfires .
Flight Anaylisis / Performance , and foibles of the vasrious models , mark by mark . And Seafires .
Other Half seems to be multitudinal pilot accounts / action etc etc .

So for the technically inclined , or those intrested in Aerodynamic Dynamics , engineering , and durability / development ,
Itsa notta too a the bad , eh .

From the Library , of course . A E book comes up on google , if your that way inclined .

I have a WWII copy of the Spitfire Pilot's Manual.  In addition to showing the location of all the cockpit controls, it has a section related to the peculiarities of the Spit.  One advised, in case the landing gear doesn't come down properly, to attain altitude and perform a "Split-S" maneuver.  This is supposed to generate enough "G" force to pull the gear down.

Floyd, Did it say to have lot's of altitude before doing a split S? Back when I was learning aerobatics in my single place Starduster I split S out of my first slow roll and lost allot of altitude and pushed close to redline. Richard

Looks like the first one would be Griffon powered by the bulge at the exhausts.

I have a Walter Umland Spitfire kit waiting for my building and flying skills to come up to the task.
Best Regards,
Bill

When it comes to scale exhaust stacks, this one is about as far from scale as you can get.  These exhaust stacks were salvaged from a smaller model, and are laughingly small!  Fortunately, it doesn't detract from flying.

It's still a great looking plane, Floyd.

The Spitfire is my favorite plane, by far. I think I have 6 models of it waiting to be built, from CL to 1:72 plastic.
Best Regards,
Bill

Bill I think Joe's Spitfires and Seafires were built in collaboration with "Windy". One of them is powered by a .90! They fly beautifully!....PhillySkip

I hear ya, Bill. I've got flying, pladtic, foam , Seafires, Spitefuls, Sea Fangs, Spitfire float planes, so many models of the gorgeous Spitfire.

If I win the lottery my friend in England said he'd restore me his Attacker wing, we'd convert it to boil off reservoir for a Griffin Unlimited racer Spiteful hybrid!

Think the " Hawker Spitfire " cooling system might be the trick !

A Mk 18 fuse , teardrop canopy , intermediate size empenagge , and the attacker wings ( Gimme ) would likely be ' the most efficent ' Reno Racer
( as its smaller area would be adquate in turns , as would the ailerons , at those speeds . Build in a bit of washout though . S?P )
one could come up with , which is why I was going to scour Pakistan for some Attacker wings , as there were a few there once .

A Napier Sabre might be a hotter set up though , as late series got 3050 Hp .Thing Above got about 485 with full military equipment ,

Boil off is the best, easily lowest drag and with the latest tech well controlled.
Griffons aren't the best race engine but I like them and good for 3200 hp. The contra-props off of the Shackelton have at least proven to be fast in modern terms with proper shaping of the blades.
Smallest stab, man. Low wetted area , adequate vertical area with a Sea Fang vertical and ventral fins.
Griffon Tempest and Tornados are good looking though air cooling is no way to race a liquid cooled engine these days.

I have the Brodak Spitfire waiting to be built and I live just outside of Edmonton, Alberta.  I have looked at this particular paint scheme for some time now but couldn't figure out the colours....you just solved that for me!  Thanks! H^^
