A Hunter's Moon! Worth the look?
« on: October 16, 2016, 09:24:25 PM »
Well, a Hunter Moon is out tonight.

I have a great deal of interest in Astronomy, sooooooooo, I took a few shots and picked the best one to Post.

I hope there are others that enjoy Astronomy.

Also called "Bunky Moon". American folklore has more than one name for each full moon.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

View was really good from FL 220 with a high power camera. Lots of detail, wish I could take pictures.  :)

"Bunky Moon"? isn't that the UN moon? n1

Each full moon of the year has a different name (or names).

I kept asking my herd of dogs why they weren't howling.  I got the usual look.

"Hunter's" and "Harvest" from sufficient light to hunt or harvest after sundown in the fall of the year.
Not so long ago, 'most everyone did both of necessity.

Yellow/Orange color goes with it, for some reason. Probably an atmospheric caused by increased dust or moisture on Earth. Or Earth 2*....or Florida*.   D>K Steve

Even though it was windy,  the temps were just right for just sitting out side and looking at the moon.  Used to be the wife would join me, now its only the dogs.  Guess I'm getting too old.  But, I'm in better shape than I was a few years ago.

Thanks for the reply.

So then, "Harvest Moon" basically means the full moon in October?

What is a "Blue Moon" then?  ("Once in a blue moon.")

My, the things we learn at Stunthanger.

Doc:

Glad your health has improved!  As for the Mrs. no longer going outside to gaze at the moon with you: Seeing as the dogs are the only creatures that will hang out with you, perhaps it's a case of you're now like something the dogs drug up and the cat (wife) wouldn't have???  LL~

A "Blue Moon" is the second full moon in the same month. Does not happen that often.

Charles     Is correct. Harvest was Sept 16th. Hunters Moon was Oct 16th. There are 12 full moons each has a name. Look it up ~^

We used to call this a "bombers' moon" for obvious reasons.

A full moon with a light low overcast was called a "gunners' moon" because hid the target while silhouetting the plane above the clouds.

Probably fairly obvious but from my location in Australia we see the moon rotated roughly 60-70 degrees counter clockwise from Charles' photo. Assuming his photo is just after moonrise :).

Is that from hanging up side down all these centuries? LL~ LL~ LL~  When doing crossing duty at a grade school the children couldn't under stand how they could be seeing the moon in the day time.

Sorry all you guys/gals in the southern hemisphere.  I couldn't control myself. S?P
