Flying Models plan # for Jim Casale's Spectrum
« on: January 13, 2011, 03:28:04 PM »
Does anyone happen to know the plan # for the Jim Casale "Spectrum" design that appeared in the July 1980 issue of Flying Models?

This isn't one of the ones that won the Nats - it's the crazy black airplane with the psychedelic color paint job.

Anyway, if someone could post the plan #, I'd greatly appreciate it - I don't have a copy of that FM issue, and I couldn't find it on the Flying Models website. Thanks!

Walter,

Nope, that's a later iteration. I think maybe mid 80s? My buddy Pat Johnston once built one of those with an ST60. Good flying plane, but the one Mike is talking about is quite a bit different. There are also two even later ones named Spectron and Spectron Columbia.

The version that Walter posted is the Spectrum Mk III, which was the 1983 Nats winner.

The one I was referencing was the earlier 1979 version, which looks a lot different, and is surprisingly smaller.

I'll see if I can post some pictures of the one I was looking for later this evening.

The 1983 Nats winner was the first one that used a ST60.

Walter posted a picture of the plans for that one above.

As Randy indicated, the black one used the OS45 FSR. I believe it (or one of its twins) used the OS40 FSR as well.
