Bill Simons Rogue
« on: December 05, 2012, 11:21:10 AM »
Folks

i've read some nice stories in this forum about how CL is important for many people and i've decided to add one of mine.
Don't know if should've posted in other board, but as the issue is the Rogue, it seemed right to do so here.

I've been building models since i was 6, but CL only when dad bought one model in '84, i was 12.
I got totally hooked and then i got a model magazine, my very first model magazine, can you guys remember what it felt like when you got started?
So, in this magazine there was a plan for a stunter, the Rogue, and it seemed the most incredible model i'd ever seen!!
Swept flaps, how is it possible? Foam wing, how? I could tell you many other "things" that crossed my mind, that made that model such a challenge.
As i was studying English, i wrote a letter to Flying Models asking how i could get a copy of the full size plans, and amazingly, they answered (gee, now all it takes is a couple clicks...).
But the best happened a couple of weeks later, 'cause without me sending any cash, FM sent me a full size plan for the model... I was in shock!
I had done it! I still wonder if that was an accident or if someone at FM just had a heart...
Anyway, many things have happened that kept me from building it, until last sunday night, when i was just reading some posts at the verdor's corner and found out that Mr. Bob Hunt has the foam wing for it...

Then, let's just say that very soon i'll have to start a new building thread, 'cause the wings and tail feathers have already been ordered.
The Rogue is that one model that i absolutely have to build, to finally accomplish what i started 28 years ago.
I was sad, very sad to learn that Mr. Simons is not doing very well lately, i loved to read his columns at FM...
Then, as a way to pay tribute to him, i'd like to ask you guys a favor: if anyone has a picture of Mr. Simons Rogue, preferably color, and wouldn't mind sending it to me, i'd like to paint my Rogue just like his, if that's ok with you guys.
There used to be a picture in that Fm plans directory, but it was BW...

I guess that's it.

Thanks

Marcus

Oh, i did send the cash later... H^^

I remember helping Bill work on his P-40 Warhawk at Flushing Meadows Park during a contest. I was stunned at how beautiful the inside of the engine compartment was. Man oh man, that guy could paint!

I built one a number of years ago and have used the aesthetics a number of times.  I love this design but it's a very big plane.

Typical Bob Hunt wing and tail from that time as the article said. A lot of northeast planes built around that set. Most used ST/60 and flew well. Seems like I had a few myself y1

I think Bill used an Enya 45 or some such. Interesting choice. As I remember from the article, it was sort of a last minute build for the Nats.

I hope this picture will help with your build.  Unfortunately, this one is not in color, but in the FM article, Mr. Simmons describes his color scheme very well.   Will have more info to follow soon.

Thanks a lot. Any help is welcome.
I've explained why this ship is so unique to me.
That pic used to be in the FM Plans Directory that sometimes came with the magazine.
Speaking of it, I must order new plans, since the one I got looks like one ancient egyptian scroll... LL~

Hi Marcus,

You will do the Rogue proud!  I believe will be a perfect Nostalgia 30 and even PAMPA Class plane for you since you have wanted it for so long.  I have one model I have never built that I fell in love with years ago, I need to build it before too long.

Bob Hunt and Mr. Simons were great friends. Anyone notice the resemblance to Bob Hunts latest electric bird???? D>K

Great observation on Mr. Hunts design flow.  Here is another outstanding design from Bob and Dean from the 80's.  The caption says it all !!

I have the FM issue that ran that pic... I remember that caption perfectly.
I agree with the resemblance, but the Rogue is the most beautiful of them all.

Marcus

I see you're on the finishing stages\painting of your other project, hope all is going well with that and that you're able to finish up soon.

I mentioned in a previous post that there would be more info coming on my current project, which is the finishing of a Bill Simons Rogue. The Rogue fuselage was started approximately 4 years ago but never got past the basic frame up and light sanding. It was put away and other projects got in the way and the Rogue started collecting some serious dust in the corner. I like you, felt the Rogue had a particular beauty to it that was not available in most of the last few years designs. Fortunately Mr. Hunt was to design the Crossfire and many people have followed building Crossfire's and lookalikes and various derivatives of the Crossfire, myself included, check my postings for photographs of my Finesse.

Once I saw your thread here in N 30 on the Rogue and realizing that the it qualified for N 30 my interest started all over again. As you can see in the included picture, I'm well on the way with the fuselage almost fully shaped, stab elevator completed, wings are in process at this point. I haven't done it yet but I do have enough photographs to do a build thread on the Rogue, this build thread should probably be in the Amped Up section because this Rogue will be electric powered.

I'm sure you have read Bill Simons article in FM magazine and realized what a superb flyer the Rogue can be. It has all the "right stuff". If we are able to keep this thread going, maybe we can get Bob Hunt to join in and add some inside information and add a color photograph or two. If you have any construction photos please post them if you have a chance, we can all use a little boost to get these projects farther along.

Hi Guys

Thanks for keeping the interest going. The project in nearly finished, just waiting on the final graphics and finish the surface hinging.  Final weight with battery looks to be 64~65oz.
I've tried to keep the look similar to Mr. Simons original. As you can see the final look will be using most of his original ideas and shapes.  This is a "big" plane, fully 690sq.",span is 60",length is 50".  Flight testing later this month.  More pictures to follow!!

Dave, I always liked the look of Bill's Scorpio over the Rogue, but with your paint scheme, the Rogue really looks outstanding!  Nice job, thanks for sharing.  Bill was a judge at my first stunt meet, many years ago!  Great guy!

Now the Rogue is finally completed. Did I mention last time, that this is a big airplane, 690 in.², 62 inch wingspan, 66.3 ounces ready to fly. I learned many things from reading Bill Simons article from the original 1981 Flying Models magazine. He flew this airplane successfully with an Enya 45 turning a 14 inch propeller, on 66 to 68 foot lines. To my amazement he had his lap times running approximately 5.6 to 5.8.
When test flights begin, I'll be using a APC F2b 12/6  propeller, turned by a E – Flight 32 motor. Bob Hunt feels this is close to the optimum propeller to use on this size aircraft. I have used my modified APC 13/5 F2b, cut down to 12.5 /5 with good success on my  electric Shark, so I'll be trying this propeller also on the Rogue. I'd like to have a lap time close to 5.2 to 5.4, but most importantly to have super line tension in all the maneuvers. The test flying will start as soon as the weather gives me a little break here in Salem. I've included a few photographs, please enjoy.
