Update, Gosney's Ryan 200 special. pics.
« on: February 20, 2008, 11:13:30 AM »
Two months into this project, and here are some pictures. I just got out of the hopital and they told me to take it easy for a couple of weeks, so I plan on making some good headway on the Ryan. It will have a Satio .90 four stroke for power, with flaps and steerable tail wheel and rudder. Two line control. Electronics courtesy of Clancey Arnold. Roger Wildman and I went over to Wright Pat museum to take pictures of there Ryan, and wouldn't you know, it was hanging 20 feet over our heads. Great pictures for the underneath. Enjoy and have a great week.

Yes Chris it is. Jack Sheeks had this kit left over from when he had his hobby store in Indianapolis, I bought it from him at the Nat's this past year. So far the wheel pants and skirts have been the most challenging part of this kit. Stunt planes go together much easier and faster.

My brother just this last summer gave me the same kit, mostly complete but the plans were cut up and it's a great looking model.
I have a nice Magnum 61 I was thinking would do the trick. Your 90 fs sounds like a great idea though.

Chris;

There is a place here in Muncie that does the plans for AMA. If you need a fresh set of plans,I could get a set of mine ran off for you.
The plans call for a .60 2 stroker, but for FAI competition, I think the 4 stroke has a more realistic sound. But then Maxie and Mike did well at the Nat's and FAI worlds with the 2 stroke set up. Your Magnum .61 should be a fine fit. Have a great week.

Thanks Allen,
I received a whole set from another good modeler.

Four strokes sound so good, do you know how well they can produce smoke with exhaust temperature?

Chris,
Dale Campbell has smoke on his Spacewalker generated with an OS 1.20. Looks to me like it works. You do need a pump to develop the pressure to get the smoke fluid into the muffler; no crankcase pressure in a four-stroke.

Cris,  Sounds like Chuck has been around it more that I. I played around with it years ago when I was still flying R/C pattern, and it was okay. Don't know if I would go thru the pain of a C/L ship with smoke tho. Lot more weight, servo, extra tank, and plumbing. But it does make for a good show at the field. And hay Chuck, the FCM contest has been moved to Aug. 23/24 for 2008. Can you make it this year? Have a good night........and good night all.

Allen, yep I get to go to your contest this year, but will miss the Nats which is on the same w/e as my club demonstration. I have volunteered for static judging on Friday at the Nats.

Started today with the rib stitching. Got the fin/rudder, and stab/elevator, pinking taped and two coats of clear dope done. Will probably start on the main wing tomorrow, lots of stitching. (5 per inch) This I will do while watching ESPN.

Chris;  The covering is Coverite. It shrinks up real nice and it has a weave that makes it look like silk or canvas. I went to the Waco Classic factory in Battelcreek, Mi. and watch their man stitch a wing. I am doing it the same way, up, over, down, back up the length of the rib and knot. I did the same on my FAI Waco, it takes a lot of time, but it's authentic. And this is something I can do in front of the tv, no mess. (my wife likes that).

I have been using my surgery recovery time stitching the Ryan. 1,644 stitches later, I'm done with that part. Monday we will go to the paint gun for the blocking coat. Looks pretty good now, but, I know when the silver goes on I'll find some places that need more attention. 572 hours to this point.

Allen,

Look at what I found!  The owner of the Ryan is still a member of the Antique Airplane Association.  They had this information on file:

John Gosney
Box 144
Centennial, WY 82055
307-742-8249

If you can get a letter from John Gosney stating the brand and type of paint he used on the Ryan, then get color chips of that paint - you will be sitting pretty with the judges.  Can't get better proof of color than that.

Since all of the principals of the original Mr. Mulligan are long passed, would a quote from a published reference for the dope manufacturer and color do as well as a signed letter in Scale circles?

Chris, that would work if I were judging provided you also provided a color chip to show me (the judge) what the color looked like. For example there are many, many shades of white.

822 + hours later, this is where I am at. Putting on the rivets was actually fun. I have a new found appreciation for the scale builder who has this down pat. I still have a long way to go, but it was a nice learning experience. Got some panel lines and some screws to add, plus all the decals, then I'm ready for the clear coat. Then I will tackle the cockpit detailing. Hope to have it ready for test flights by June some time. I admire all you guys who have built and flown/fly FAI scale, every time I look at this ship, I see something else that needs addressed. Lots of work, thats for sure. Enjoy the pics.

Mike , I had a pleasent conversation with the origanal owner and builder of this Ryan. He told me the paint was indeed Randolf (I'm sure I miss spelled it) paint, so that hurdle out of the way. He said he had pictures of when he and his dad modified and painted the Ryan into a competitive aerobatic ship. Said he had two years of his young life invested in this Ryan, and  many found memories working with his father on this project. He said this was his first plane he flew in spotsman compition. His dad flew it in expert or open class, they sold it to John and modified a Pitt's for there next compition aircraft. So much information, I could not retain it all. We will talk more, and maybe I need to tape it, my memory does not serve me well sometimes. He said he is still involved in aerobatic compition, I'd like to see him fly sometime. Thanks for your help Mike.

Allen,
The model looks fantastic. I'm quite sure the old saw about a model never being finished is truer still when speaking of large FAI Scale ships!
Randolph dope color charts with chips shouldn't be too hard to find.
have fun finishing her up.

Allen,

Did Mike Heuer say which Randolph red they used?  There's more than one.
I'd like to record that information in our SIG archives, because we get asked that question every so often.

Mike, I just got off the phone with Mike Hauer and here is the paint facts. #105 Insignia White; #190 Tennessee Red; #215 Dakota Black; All Randolph paints used on his Ryan STA 200 Special.
Hope to see ya at the Sig contest in June.

Allen,

All you need now is to get a signed letter from Mike Heuer stating that he and his father painted that Ryan STA Special with Randolph paints #105 Insignia White; #190 Tennessee Red; #215 Dakota Black.  Put that letter in your scale presentation book, along with the exact color chips from Randolph, and you will have the best color documentation that a person can get for an airplane that no longer exists.

That should work well for you for static judging, provided of course that you use the same paint, or other paint that perfectly matches the Randolph samples, on your model.

Mike, I just got off the phone with Mike Heuer and he will send a letter of paint documentation to both you and I. (with numbers and colors) I don't know if I will have the Ryan ready for the Nats or not. It seems like it is taking more time the closer I get to the finish. (if that makes any sense or not) Mike just got back from a two week trip to Europe, so that is why the delay on the letter.
See ya in a couple of weeks at Sig.

Hello Allen-
The Ryan looks beautiful! However, the colors mentioned in your post are NOT Randolph colors, they are Poly Fiber colors. Unfortunately, Poly Fiber recently bought out the Randolph aircraft division and no long make the Poly Fiber dopes. The Poly Fiber chart has the colors 105 Insignia white, 190 Tennessee red and 215 Dakota black on it. Too bad as the poly Fiber dope was the best I ever found. However, all is not lost. The present Randolph dealers are "mixing dealers" and make up the colors right in their dealerships. I was at one in Texas the other day and asked " Can you still mix the old Poly Fiber colors?" and they said yes. Try contacting Aircraft Technical Supply in Orient Ohio, I have purchased from them before and they are most helpful. They are at 877-877-3334 and can probably supply you with the Poly Fiber colors. Also, if you would like a copy of the Poly Fiber color chart, call me, I have several here in my stash.

This will be my last post on the Ryan. Here are some pics., it is about 95% done, still got some small details to finish out and add to it. I will be going to meet with Jack Sheeks for some finial going over before I test fly it next week or the week after C/L Nats. Should be ready for C/L Scale Nats. Can not wait. Really pretty model, Allen. You know the drill on flying them, when scale ships are properly balanced and the engine is broken in, it's a no brainer.
