New Saito CL motors
« on: October 18, 2007, 01:55:30 PM »
Horizon Hobby has just announced that beginning in January
they will have Saito 56, 62, & 72 CL motors. These are dedicated
CL motors from Saito.
***************************************************
FA-56CL w/ Muffler and Venturi:AN

Key Features

Purpose-built for the control line crowd
Ultra-lightweight muffler
Specially designed control line venturi system lets you adjust size to suit your application

Overview

For decades, Saito engines have been a mainstay in local flying circles and control line world championship events. Until now, these engines required significant modification to be converted for control line functionality.

Leave it to the four-stroke experts to design purpose-built engines for the control line crowd. At the heart of this advancement are an ultra lightweight muffler and a specially designed control line venturi system which, with simple inserts, allows modelers to adjust the venturi size to suit their particular application. Now you can purchase a brand new engine with the CL venturi already installed—no more relying on others to convert your engine for you.

And, like all Saito engines, these powerhouses are engineered with that same Saito quality and reliability you’ve come to know and trust.
 ************************************************************

That was copied and pasted directly from the Horizon Hobby website. The
part # is: saie056cl if anyone would like to take a look. Evidently, CL is being
looked at once again as a viable product as more and more companies add
CL specific products.

Interestingly, the Saito rep at Horizon saw my Saito 56 setup (Pat Johnson manifold/venturi
setup mfg. by UHP) several years ago, and was very interested. And, about
seven months ago another Horizon rep called and ordered a couple of Saito
manifold/venturi setups. Hmmmmmmm.............

Laaaaaaater, Steve

Steve,

I just got my blurbs from Horizon today and posted a notice over on SSW.

I wondered where they ever got that idea.  LL~

Maybe CL stunt isn't as dead as people think.

Take care,

I hope some people (a LOT of them)  will email Horizon and encourage them to try to get Saito to produce and import C/L versions of the FA-30 and FA-40a.

cheers,
Ken

Steve,

I looked at the website but it says they are "out of stock" (for the 62CL anyway). I suspect this is because they are not actually available until January. I'm certainly thinking of trying one out. Thanks for the notice.   <=

Wow! this is fantastic.. A little too late for me as I already bought two 62's and my 56's already have UHP manifolds.

Steve do you have a email add or is it on the Horizon site.. We really need the 40a and 30, would be nice if they started importing them again..

Thanks for all the interest guys.

The engines are currently being produced and January should be latest time they will arrive.  The engines come with one venturi insert so you will have two different venturi diameters out of the box.  Very easy to change and a nice lightweight muffler to boot.  The prop drivers are being anodized blue so its easy to identify the CL versions.

Once we get these engines in the field we would of course appreciate any and all feedback. We've done our testing here, but nothing replaces customer experience for making products better.  If anybody is in the Chicago area this weekend we have them on display at the iHobby Expo at the Rosemont Center.  Stop by if you get the chance.

Hey Pete, Man I love Saitos, been campaigning a 56 and 40a all season with fantastic results.. Own a 30, 3 40a's two 56's and two 62's. The fixed venture with inserts is fantastic but you really to go one step further. The choke area of the venturi needs to be infinitely adjustable. I accomplished this with nylon screws, through the side of the insert on my 40 and right down the throat on my 56 supported by the firewall.. Kinda a poor mans RC carb but more of a set and forget adjustment that is rock solid reliable. This allows for fine tuning of the power without a complex carb or make-shift linkage that is inconsistent.

Pete: I met you a few years ago at the Nats when my
Saito 56 bearings gave out and I showed you the UHP/Johnston
manifold/venturi setup at that time. We also have since
added the Saito 72 & 82 manifold sets, OS 52 manifold
set, and the Saito 40.

The Saito 40 is a GREAT little motor! I have 2 of them on
my XF-11 with the UHP setup. This one was much more
difficult for us to produce, as we had to cast a separate
intake tube since the carb/intake tube is a one piece item
on the 40. Is there any chance at all of getting Saito to also
make a Saito 40 CL version? I am sure you could get A LOT
of positive response here on the 40 as a stunt motor.

Thanks, Steve

Pete,

Thanks for the info and welcome back to the "Real World".  :## :##

I hope these engines sell well enough to encourage more development. Who knows - maybe we'll see some CL kits next?  LL~ LL~

Take care,

Ron

Kits or ARFs from Horizon would be a great thing.
Their Hangar 9 ARFs for RC are top notch. I used to
have an Advance 40; what a great little plane. The
quality of their ARFs is excellent. Doug and I have
been raving about them for almost 10 years now.
Ever since my Hall's Hobby House days.

I also just made this discovery today when I was looking at Horizons parts listings for Saito.  You can
imagine my excitement when I saw them listed on the website!   n~  This is cool!  I already posted
over at the other forum.
- It would be great to be able to get the parts required to change over from the R/C to C/L
versions, both as a conversion kit and as seperate parts.  I wonder if the mufflers
are the same as the previous, uncast versions??  Welcome back to the 'Ring' Pete!

Pete while this is great news; man you gots to reintroduce that Saito 40A. I actually would have prefered to see the 40CL, 56CL and the 62CL as opposed to the 72CL, an (engine which I  own-carb wired open). My Saito 40A is without question, one of the finest motors of any type I have ever owned.

Bob, thanks for your support of Saito.
Steve, Good to hear from you.  I remember our meeting... I have a trip planned to visit the Saito folks next month and will talk about the 40 with them then.

Ron, Steve et al... keep your eyes posted to our ads.  You might be pleasantly surprised:)

Thanks for the warm welcome from everyone.  The stunt family is still that, a great family that welcomes everyone into their fold.

Pete,

Sure happy to see you posting on the CL boards, gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling...

Sure hope Horizon makes the CL parts available for retrofits, this could be a pretty good market for a while.

Also we need a right angle muffler (adaptor - pipe) for all the engines used in CL.. We don't like breaking Saito heads when something unexpected happens...

Pete,

Wow, it's been what?  Twenty years since I bumped into you out at Spanaway?  I had just separated from USAF and looking to get back into the hobby again.  You had just gotten out of the Army.  That was before either of my 2 kids were born.  Oldest daughter is now a freshmen in college studying for her RN and my son is a sophomore in HS.  He won the Beginner Stunt event at Sig in '06.  We're both flying CL and RC and he's the far better pilot than I.

I just bought a Saito .62 for our H9 UltraStick.  Loads of fun.  Nice to see you back!  One of our UC flyers (Keith Sandberg) is campaigning a Legacy with Saito 56.  It works very, very well.

Bob R,

Regarding the muffler question.  We have a number of ways in the Saito line to answer your question.

1.  Rt Angle muffler adapter.  This inserts directly into the cylinder head and allows you to direct the exhaust system as you see fit.
2.  We have both straight or curved manifolds that will join the muffler to the rt angle adapters.
3.  The muffler shown is the style we will provide with the CL engines.

Hope this helps!

Pete

Hey Pete,

Way to go.  Cmon Horizon Hobbies!!!  Lord knows we could use you guys!!!!

Check this out.  A little blast from the past.

http://www.egpworld.com/ultrahobby/teamuhp/4stroke.htm

Pat Johnston Manifold-a beautiful and simple little device that replaces the stock carburetor and allows a stock OS FP venturi to be inserted utilizing the standard “spray bar through the venturi” arrangement.  When I first started in the 4-stroke program, Pat was manufacturing the manifolds himself (he is quite good at it).  Since then, the manufacture of the manifolds has been passed to Ultra Hobby Products.  I helped develop the UHP version with Dallas toolmaker Dirk Tolendaar.  We took the original design and cleaned up some of the machining and added an o-ring seal to the carburetor downtube so that no silicone was needed for installation. The manifold is sold as a complete kit with everything needed to convert your Saito 56 or 72 into a stunt engine.

We have always been Saito supporters.

When is Horizon going to come out with a CL plane to go with the Saito?
  I have several Saito designs.

I think this is the one for Horizon.  It just needs a few adjustments.

Brad,

Thanks for your ideas!
Guys - if it seems that I don't respond to all the questions about future projects it is because I learned a while ago in this industry that it is best not to talk about a project until it is at least on the way to the warehouse.  Saves an awful lot of disappointment ;)

Hi!  Here are the pictures I promised about the new Saito CL engines.

1.  Saito 62 right side showing lightweight muffler and new venturi body in the carb block.
2.  Closeup of the venturi assembly
3.  Sliding the venturi block from the carb body
4.  Venturi block and insert.
5.  Installed venturi insert.

Venturi dimensions:

56 & 62 .275" w/o insert, .238" w/insert
72  .295" w/o insert, .258" w/insert

Hope this helps!
