Aluminum colored finish?
« on: October 08, 2015, 08:31:29 PM »
Has anyone used Napa DC DC540 as a base coat and over sprayed with Top Flite LustreKote Spray.  I am looking for an aluminum finish on a 15 size club racer.  Model will be all balsa wood.  Aluminum colored paint seem to be in short supply.  Are any of the rattle can paints from Lowe's fuel proof enough to work for this.

Hey John. I have a few quarts of Randolph silver dope, come over and get some. It will go over the gray primer.  H^^

Sounds good. Thanks!  y1

John,

Being a small model, you may want to play around with the peel and stick stuff that's available which is real aluminum.

Comes in sheets, goes on easy, sticks really well and you can clear it.

I've never used it for a full models, but I have used it here and there.

Been so long I don't remember what the stuff is called? Age.

Someone must know?

Here's the stuff, old left overs, on this Robart strut. The strut is waiting for clear.

Might just work for you, after all, it is aluminum.

Good luck,

Charles

Some have done good looking scale aluminum finishes using aluminum tape from a hardware store.
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

John,

Well this is not shiny buffed alu surface but I'm a big fan of cheap industrial polyurethane paint (2-component) with aluminium pigment. It is very, very light and resistant. But of course, if you want a buffed surface, it needs a clear coat.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.
