Ringmaster Build
« on: September 03, 2015, 08:42:09 AM »
On to the Ringmaster.... So for the upcoming event in October, I am attempting to construct a Ringmaster S-1. Already have a good start on it. It will have a "Utility Finish" applied. And some simple graphics. Having fun so far. Pics to follow.

...Hey John, If you look at the template for the rudder, You'll notice a  line 3/16" above the bottom. This is the Cut Line so you can glue the fin to the fuse and the rudder to the stab. Unless you have something against Up Elevator.   Cheers,  John

Hopefully he will double check the plans.   The elevator is out behind the tail of the fuselage.   The last S-1 I built was from an RSM Mfg kit.   It is the lightest of the lot and has also survived a mishap at the field.

All over it Guys!!! I was just sticking it together with pins for a progress shot. The real problem is with the # 7 rib... It was brought to my attention by another modeler, and sure enough it is just a bit smaller than the other ones and it is very difficult to tell unless you stack all of the ribs together. So for all of you scratch builders out there, do beware!!!
Apparently this is well known and I may be beating the dead horse here. This fellow also mentioned that the plans will state "Corrected # 7 rib" if it is the right rib profile. These are plans I downloaded from the Outerzone. Nice plans otherwise and an easy enogh fix.

Also did some graphics last night, couldnt find any of the local sign guys to make me a Ringmaster decal for the wing, so I took a piece of silk span and taped it to a piece of copy paper and printed the image right onto the silkspan. I will dope that onto the wing after it is covered. I believe I hadread this in an old free flight article somewhere..

Doc,
Been thinking about that one myself. I have a very nice low angle block plane that is very friendly. I think that will get me close. I plan to finish it with a long sanding bar. I was going to drill some hole in the LE but I chickened out. I was afraid the drill bit would chew it up. I ran a couple of test and it did not look good. I came across a molded built up LE from John Cralley on FB and I may build another RM and try that method. Wing is heavy for sure, hope to make it up in the fuselage.

Yes it does? seems like I have spent alot of time shaping that leading edge. There is a molded leading edge I would like to try that looks really lite and should be a bit quicker, and probabally cheapr ($$). Other than that it has

been a pleasant experience. I have not built anything in 16 years, I have alot more tooling now so it seems easier. And again I can't thank the good folks on the Forum for all of the advice and support through out these last couple

of projects.

I like your weights, John. I have a couple hundred but wasn't sure if they might be too much as they weight about 1.2 pounds each.

Bill,

The weights seem perfect for the job, not to heavy. I bought a bucket full when I was doing a lot of bullet casting. I also have poured some into a cast iron muffin pan (used only for that prurpose) and they weigh about twice as

much 2+/- Lbs. I like using the weights alot better than pins.

I have the muffin pan ones also, John. Half of our household goods are still in storage until we can buy another house. I have somewhere around 2500# in alloy but the only ones I've seen in the storage unit are the round ones. I'll have to dig deeper. I've been a CBA member for decades but competative shooting has taken a back seat to C/L flying! Time to re-purpose some assets   AP^

Doc,

I hinged the elevataor with cloth hinges, so I think I'm "covered".... I like to hinge my control surfaces that way, very neat and seals the hinge line. Use Nitrate to stick them on, then tissue over top. You ever use silk over cloth hinges? Next plane I build I want to use Silk.

I use cloth hinges under Monokote.   In fact most of my planes have cloth hinges.

John while taking pictures of the plane I decided to do one of the stab/elevator hinge line.
