2.4 Ghz handle for 15 carrier
« on: August 29, 2015, 08:46:43 PM »
I made some progress on the new control system for my 15 carrier plane. Still a few things to do, wrap the handgrip, a few more holes for lead wires and some further hardware. It looks like it will work fine. I'm surprised at how light the handle is. I was afraid it would be too heavy and hard to use for long slow fight.

Robert,

Nice work, looks really nice.  H^^

Guessing you bent the aluminum?

Did you make a close hanger wire template or did you draw it out?

I'm working on one for scale, that's the reason for my interest.

Here is a quick, inexpensive, and complete way to try 2.4 in your carrier planes. This system comes with battery and matched servo. They are very cheap and available through Ebey.

I just free handed it. Bending and checking fit as I went along. I matched up the attachment points with the existing screws on the handle.
I plan to wrap the grip portion with electrical tape to secure the aluminum to the back of the handle.

Here's the finished product. The upper and lower arms are now tied to the brackets from the housing and I have added leadout holes on the front piece. It has turned out much sturdier than I had anticipated. An exoskeleton so to speak. It will easily take a 25 lb pull for .15 carrier and would probably stand up to much more. I still may wrap the grip portion with either thin leather or as Charles suggested, a tennis racket type wrap. Now I just have to wait until the motor I need shows up at Innov8tive Designs.

John, glad to hear you have had good luck with this radio. It was cheap, about $27 or so with receiver. It also has the advantage of a rechargeable Lipo battery in the handle that is smaller and lighter than 4 or more double A's.

Bob -

Looks very good.  One FYI to add - be sure that the throttle trigger is going all the way to zero throttle when released.  As they come, these car radios are biased to allow for some reverse direction and to get full throw in an aircraft application, you need to change the centering - the simplest  way I've seen is just to pull the trigger all the way forward with a rubber band.

I have one of Ralph Saxtons RC set ups and it work very well. I still prefer the 3line set up mostly because it what I am used to. Ralph also makes some nice carrier plans based on the Ringmaster wing. His prices are great and the gear he sells works fine too.

Note that this handle is on 27 MHz - not legal for competition control line events (2.4 GHz is required).
yes, my bad Ralph also sells a 2.4 GHz setup
