This one sez it's a Continental W670-9A.  I'm kinda disappointed that he's using a prop instead of putting power to the wheels.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I'm pretty sure that engine would destroy a vw transaxle in short order.

Picky picky. First, there are other transaxles out there.  Second, with that much torque you hardly need anything other than first and reverse.

That little dinky prop is hardly going to transmit the full power of the engine.

Prop might be for cooling.

In the 60's and 70' there were several turbo charged VW drag cars with VW engines making over 400 HP using modified VW Bus Trans axels!  No Problem!

Farmtruck and Azn's Dung Beetle.

Its probably a Pratt & Whitney R-985, 9 Cylinders 300-450 HP depending on version. 985 Cubic Inch capacity. .

There's no power takeoff possible on the VW side, so It's just bolted on for effect and the impeller probably just cools the engine a bit as it idles away temporally without a load on that prop spline facing us.

Actually a whole bunch od WW2 US built amphibious vehicles like DUCKS and landing craft etc had various P&W or Curtis Wright single row aircraft radials as power plants. They worked ok. :-)

Looks like a glorified test stand. we have all seen radials running unfortunately there is no road test with this video. A great disappointment.

I had a bunch of VWs in 60s through the 80s! Starting with a 62 Beetle. I suspect that is a fake setup with the radial aircraft engine just for show! Probably uses the regular VW engine for driving!

Kind of reminds me of my first (1956) Stock Car , a 1937 Ford Coupe with a worn out engine.  As I ran it out to the starting line for a brake check the PA announcer said " Sure looks like car #99 is burning soft coal instead of gas!" It passed the brake test, but the chief steward  asked if I might think about getting a ring job and come back next week.  I did both, and in the meantime my sister hand painted "Joe's Coal Truck" on the hood. Memories tumble throughout my mind , and while I don't live in the past I sure do visit there a lot.

It probably is a W670. It's a 7 cylinder wide head versus the Wasps' 9 cylinder. There were many examples sold to A&P schools. We had a couple at the school I worked at. Ours originally were made for Stuart tanks. We bolted props to them and ran them on test stands.

They have almost no other value whereas 985s were used any many different aircraft and I can sell all day.

I have a sticker on my tool box that says "Real Airplanes Have Round Engines".  y1

No value?  Stock engine on Stearman's, various Waco's,  PT 23, Cessna 190.   Hardly no value.

I should have clarified my statement.  The tank versions, which are were widely available as surplus, only had a single ignition system and, therefor unuseable in aircraft.

For those unfamiliar with piston engine aircraft, pretty much all of them have dual, independent ignition systems. 2 magnetos, 2 spark plugs per cylinder. This is redundant safety measure. The w670s for non-aircraft use had only a single magneto and the cylinders will only accept one spark plug.

While it's not possible to tell from that video if that engine is the aircraft or tank version, I'm making the assumption that it's the tank version given their relatively wide availability and limited use.

If Tim the tool man can put a Harley engine and a Jet engine on a lawnmower, you can put a radial in a VW.

More power. Ahhr Ahhr

I had thought about building a Yates Dragon for my Orwick 64, but after flying my 850 sq. inch 68" span Taurus with it and seeing it fly 4 second laps on 67' lines with the timer only half advanced, I decided my reflexes are not the same as JC when he was in his 20's. If we could fly on 100' lines I might survive. LOL Sometimes more power ain't the answer.
