I flew a kit-built Midwest Magician 35 for years with a Fox 35 Stunt on it, so I know that combination works but that's mainly because that was the only suitable engine I had back then. On your list, the Enya 35 may be the most suitable, and the LA 25 is also capable especially if it is the newer silver-case version. See Brett Buck's comments on this forum for how to run the LA 25 and do exactly what he suggests.

Rusty,

I have a magician that has an Enya 35 on it. But to clarify that statement, it is the new BB ringed version that is built on the 20/25 case. This is abut the best flying Magician that I've ever had and if you can get one of these engines or an equivalent then you will probably be golden I guess the point I'm pushing is use a light engine.

My first on had a Fox 35 and flew very well. The next three had McCoy 40 Red Heads which were outstanding. I now have one with a McCoy 35 Red Head and one with a 40. Put it on 58' eye to eye lines, and it should fly well with the 35 Red Head. Mine have all weighed between 35 and 38 ounces and all flew pretty much alike.

I am going to scratch build a Midwest Magician 35.

I don't know what engine to put on it.   I asking for help in deciding.

The choices are:

Fox 35 stunt
Johnson 35
Enya 35
Supertigre G21 35
Supertigre C 35
McCoy 35 red head
OS FP 40
OS LA 25
Ohlsen & Rice 33 (or is it 31?)
K&B Stallion 35
OS 32 F
Fox 35x
Fox 36x
Fox Combat Special
Fox 29 stunt
Enya 29
McCoy 29 super stunt

My suggestion would be the 25LA (presuming it meets the "new 25LA test" previously mentioned), far and away the best choice as far as performance and reliability goes. I would be inclined to say the OS32 would be a good second choice.

Hi Rusty,

For purely Nostalgic reasons, I would use the McCoy .35RH.  It will do a fine job of powering the Magician.  For performance, I would go with Brett and say the OS .32F.  We have used one extensively in contest use.  Mounted in a '59 Ares, Aaron did very well with it.

I had an early blue-case LA25 on a scratch-built Goldberg Shoestring, nearly identical in size to the Magician, and it pulled that model just fine. The later silver-case version is stronger but the blue one works. Just in terms of reliability and avoiding high-castor fuels I suggest one of your modern-era OS engines, the 25 or the 32.

The "old" 25LA runs OK, but I am a bit concerned about the power available for a Magician. "New" 25LA, 25FP, 20FP if you follow the directions to the letter, OK, but old 25LA is pushing it. The only hesitation have about the 32F is that I don't have a good tested setup for it but it's plenty powerful enough.

40FP, maybe if you have one you know for sure works properly, but the typical stock example is FAR too powerful for most people to handle on this sized airplane.

Of the others (long list of low-performance 4-2 break motors), I would choose a Fox 35 but the usual caveats apply. I have done the Fox VS 20 and 25FP switch before, of course, and there's no comparison overall. The Fox might be the best overall choice between the rest of the engines, but replacing it with the 20FP felt like gravity had been turned off in terms of vertical performance.

If the LA25 doesn't work out, the OS 32F could work well.  I ran one for several years in the mid to late 90's and really liked it.

Brett,
I have flown two different ARF Noblers with LA25's turning 10-4 APC Props.  Absolutely no problem on 60 ft lines (center to center) here in Tucson (2300 ft ASL) on 15% nitro 22% oil (half and half).  The Noblers were light at 38 and 40 oz and flew very well.
I would stack any LA25 against a Fox 35 any day, and a lot of Magicians were flown with Fox 35's, including one of mine about 57 years ago.

Jim did any pieces from the bottle rocket SpaceX launched Sunday land in your yard?

;D  Nah!!  Just the smell of the neighbors cooking .... and she "KAIN'T" !!!   LL~  Seriously, the news showed the debris field drifting northward towards Jacksonville but about 120 miles off shore.  Wish the neighbor was about that far away when she cooks!!   LL~

I used an FP40 clone (Tower 40) on a cheater Magician. One or two extra head gaskets. Start with small .257 venturi. I used a .272. Tongue muffler. Powermaster 5% 10%m 22% (50/50). Free flowing tongue. 10.5x4.5 APC. Thunderbolt RC. or Eny #3. Set it so it sounds mean with a bit of a stutter on the ground. Power matched plane very well. Should miss a bit in 2 stroke in level flight. Break when nose is pulled up. 4.5 ounces of fuel for pattern, give or take a bit.

Use an Universal Engine Mount and have fun trying all your favorite engines and see which one you like the most.
