I'm about to the point where it would take the same amount of time to finish this new plane as it would to "pretty up" the old plane for the NATs. The old "Impcat" is tried and proven, this new ship is a "Questionairre", it may not even fly, much less get trimmed out to any reasonable degree. But, dang! I really like the looks of this new one.

It is "Mule #5", an attempt to camouflage Richard Oliver's "Mule #4" design in a "lawn dart" look. It seemed out of scale to me with an "Impcat" look, so I have attempted a "Palladin" look. With the addition of numbers and my usual "Let's Roll" on the underside (in memory of Todd Beamer's last words on 9/11) I should have it ready for clear on the morrow.

Thanks Tommy Boy. It's been such a long time, you may not remember, but you did the computer files on this wing design and George Hamby laser cut the ribs. I thought I was getting pretty good with posting pictures, but, I was wrong. I'll try to put the pictures here, as opposed to the other thread concerning Dave Roland...

Looks like it is flying the pattern just sitting there. A plane that looks that good has to be good. Nice Job Dale. Knowing how you build and finish I can imagine it even looks better in person. All the best to you and Linda Bob at the NATS.

"The Duke" would be a great name for this plane, but, it already has "Mule V" on the wing, so maybe "The Duke" will be next time.

I'm looking into a new product, at least for me..."blender". It "melts" and levels those areas where the clear flashes and blends in seam lines. It can be sprayed with a gun, but also is available in rattle cans. John Hill, Col. McMillan, and RO have used this with really great results, the reviews I've found in car painting blogs are mixed.

Does blender go in with the clear or do you spray this on afterward?

I'm painting myself into a corner, Doug....first, a caveat to all, your results may vary! but, here is what I am going to do. First, shoot the areas such as stencil lines, paint mask lines, etc with a coat of blender, wait five minutes and hit these areas again. Give it five minutes then spray the entire plane with blender. (I'm not trying the rattle can, I want to be able to adjust the spray pattern) After it dries, at least three to four hours, I'll sand the whole plane to a level condition, this stuff hopefully sands real well, powdering off nicely. Then, spray clear on the whole plane. You know the rest, just like on your Tulsa Gluedobber post on finishing, the fun part...buffing/polishing to bring out the shine. Friends in high places do it this way.

That's it, we'll see what happens....

Just musing here, Bob G used all dope, except the leading edge forward was car-cleared, remember that?

Bottom opening looks on small side for a pipe, you using rear muffler ? What motor ?

Hi Allen,
I've been messing with this plane for over three years and there's a little of just about everything on it. Mostly, it's epoxy primer and then auto paint- base coat/clear coat.

I must apologize to Sparky for using up so much band-width. It's a tool to spur me on to finish this plane. It seems to be working, I've got more done in the last week than in the last two years.

There are different types of "blenders"....some mix in with clear, others go over the base coat before the clear, which is what I'm trying. It is sprayed over the base coat, allowed to dry, then sanded lightly prior to spraying the clear. It smooths out the masking tape lines and prepares the surface for the clear, making for easier rubbing out of the clear. So be careful in trying this out, it's easy to make a mess.

I'm pretty sure you'll have this plane 'in tune' and the engine 'on song' before you know it.

I've had some difficulties with the clear this time, after buffing it, there stil are some non high gloss spots left.
Oh well, we're flying these things at 55mph. Nobody will see it....

Sunday will be my first contest since 2008. I haven't lost it, but my finesse is out of the window.
Never mind, carefully building it up always worked for me.

By the way, last month I met Alan Munde again for the first time in 41 years: 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume?'
We were playing the same festival, at 2 hours from here. What a nice reunion that was.

"Banjo Sandwich". Tex Logan used to have an annual pickin' party in Morristown, NJ, where he lived. Linda and I got an invite and Allan was playing with Jimmy Martin. Monroe, all the biggies were there....I especially enjoyed meeting Bill Keith, I doubt if Alan Munde would recall me. Lot'sa good times, I'm, glad he got to see you, Bruno. Maybe we'll get together again sometime, I hope so,

Flew it today, have yet to sort out the prop/pipe/rpm/nitro/etc, stuff. But, the main question is answered....it flies, and flies very well. I had concerns because the stab "looked" to have negative incidence, but, a flat building table and incidence meters begged otherwise. They were right. The vertical C/G was a question, as I had lowered the complete drive-train 3/8ths inch from #4 Mule. All good, no hunting.

It's a big'un, and 75 ozs is actually about as light as I can build it, but the thick wing volume (not squares) has a ton of lift, it is the first plane I've built that actually has a genuine glide... landings are fun!

Great Movie! When I'm " flying" over a layer of big poofy clouds the theme song from that movie always creeps into my head

My " Git er done" movie that I pop in when trying to expedite a build is Jimmy Stewerts "Spirit of St Louis". Love the construction sequences
