Painting Aluminum Spinner
« on: June 26, 2015, 11:08:53 PM »
I have a new aluminum spinner that I was cutting prop slots and managed to drop and ding.  It's a small dent so I'm wondering if I could fill with Super Fil, prime and paint?

James,
If the ding is small, I think I'd mix up a bit of JB Weld and use that to fill it.  Sand smooth and then use some etching auto primer to prime it.  Then paint with color and clearcoat.

Thanks Allan, I hadn't thought of JB Weld.

If it's a Warbird, you could leave the dent.  ;D

Is JB Weld heavy? Local auto body shops will have All-Metal. Aluminum base filler.

Bet they will spread a bit on it for free.

What size and brabd is the spinner. Must be thin to dent.

Not a warbird, and it's a Brodak spinner.

You could use a small clamp and possibly press it out?

Alan was dead on about the etching primer.  Then just paint it like you would the rest of the plane.

If you add any weight to the spinner, it will be out of balance. I have a long sad story abut a long needle nose spinner that was out of balance on my Super Cavalier and it wasn't dented. It just came that way.So be very careful about adding off set weight to any spinner.  What's a dent anyway, but character. Kinda like a bent nose. H^^ LL~

Just where exactly on the spinner is the ding??
It's right behind the "nose point".

Hi James. I have had a few get dents in the same area. I found a sturdy dowel (not unlike some found nose paint brushes), rounded off and a small hammer I could tap the dent out enough so it didn't matter. ANY weight added to the spinner near the tip will only accentuate the off balance nature of the thing. If you don't believe me, just add weight and have some fool start the engine for you. You stay behind it. D>K
Thanks for tip but this spinner is destined for the recycling bin.  I was looking at it and noticed the flat portion where the nose cone mates to the spinner is bent way off center, so it was more than just a small dent.
