What I learned in Roseburg this weekend
« on: May 25, 2015, 10:22:23 AM »
If you are not used to flying in much wind,

And if you want to complain about the wind,

And there are not trees and cows and houses flying by,

Don't open your mouth where Paul Walker can hear you, on pain of pained looks.
AMA 64232

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

He's not known as the "Wind Man" for nothing...

Sad note. On the drive back, we stopped for the night in Salem. Beautiful nice breeze there when we arrived. Oh well.

Tim, get that Legacy built. It will work better. Wind won't be so problematic.

Paul could put up a 550+ point pattern in a hurricane. Best wind flier I've ever seen.

The greatest thing I have seen Paul do is his rain dance while flying a practice flight at Lawenceville/Vincennes in 1993!  Remember that Paul?

So, do you set the plane up different for wind?

I learned that Steve Helmick is a tougher stunt judge than Tim Wescott.  Thanks to you both for a great job. It is appreciated.

I learned the many faces that went with the names I've seen here and heard of before.  A great group of people!  One of the best contests I've been to in a long time (including Soaring contests).

Also, in no particular order:
I need and want more wind experience.
I must not become a spectator watching my plane even for a nano-moment.
(Practice) judging is fun and very demanding!
That I need to not wipe out my Classic plane two days before the contest (have a back up).
To talk less and listen more when given advice.
To allow more time to get the grin off my face afterwords.

Seriously, Thanks to Paul, Scott, John, Mike, and all the others for such a great, great contest.

PS. Kisses to Chumley  ;)

I'm trying to learn how to be more of a hardass, but Steve is definitely one of the masters.

Russell and Tim, you'll find that some are more frugal with the points than I am, and some are more generous. Get over it!

Paul apparently wished he could put in a few flights on the circle in Salem? What he didn't see was reported by Alan Resinger on arrival in Roseburg...the Salem circle was covered completely with goose guano, and he wouldn't even set his plane down. No wonder it won Concours?

Consider it done, Tom.  He spends the day under my desk, so I didn't have to go far.

I learned, check for recall notices on your car before embarking on a journey. Hey, at least it's fixed now.

Results for the Northwest Regionals (in Roseburg) are posted on www.flyinglines.org.

There was a record number of stunt entries, and most of the flying was about as good as it can possibly get.
