During the flying season I try not to build too much to induce myself to get out of the shop and go fly but we seem to be in a spring monsoon pattern here and I'm getting bored. So.....I've wanted to try an I beam version of my Desperado. With only about 7-8 days in this is going very well and obviously lighter than the standard .76 version. In the 80's I built a lot of I beamers but stopped when the lady in my life at that time asked why my airplanes had the ' bumps' on them and the other guys' airplanes were smooth- she didn't like the bumps. Leave it to a woman....anyway this is my first one in maybe twenty years and I don't mind the bumps too much.

Looks great Dave and should be some what lighter. Just think in a few weeks we will be wishing for rain and lower temperatures.

Maybe I should build an ark. Want to mow the field but afraid I'll get the trailer stuck in the muck John. Maybe Monday....I'm sure impressed with the wood I'm getting from Tom Morris. Sheesh...flash flood watch today through Monday night!

Dang, I am glad I re-read your first post a second time after reading your title. I thought you had one heck of a rainy day to do what you did, then I seen you said that it was approximately 7-8 days in. Looking really good.

Looking good, Brother Dave! Ya know I love those beamers. I always covered them with Silkspan or Silk for strength but I think polyspan will be as good as silk for a covering. You do add a 1/16th" support spar about 1/2 way between the spar and TE, right? Billy told me to use a full height spar instead of individual uprights on the big planes. The support spar adds torsional support as well as keeping the ribs from collapsing.

I was contemplating that Bill. In the old days I used individual spanners . Not sure now I could put one vertical spar in. Think I'll do 1/8"x3/16" hard stick struts.

Hi Dave,

You can slip in the 1/16th" X ~1" spar in anytime up until you cover the wing, I had the wing built on my USA-1 and was going to use the uprights on each pair of ribs (top and bottom

) when Billy told me very sternly I might add, to NOT leave out that spar and do not use the uprights. And as many I-Beamers as he has built, I gotta believe him. It makes a definite difference in the rigidity of the wing. On an Ares size model, the uprights are fine, especially if the TE is faced with .007 sheet CF, but the big ones need the spar. I would never argue with THE MAN.

Here's a progress shot. I decided to change the cosmetics on this one and give it a new name- Prairiefire. Not sure about the pilot...might leave it out. All I have look too big up front.

Thought I'd post a final shot of the plane. I think it will fly fine but I abandoned the finish with just two airbrushed coats of clear. This turned out to be a 13-14 ounce cover and finish job with only one light filler coat which was wet sanded before color. It's about the same weight as all my larger Desperados ( low 70s). These are just big planes with over 700 sq. I did use the great silk span I got from Easy Built models but didn't help the weight much. At this weight these ships are my best so I'll just trade the appearance points for air points any day.

Thank you so much Randy. I really wanted to put wheel pants on her but the pair I built were an ounce each before mounting and I really don't think they would last long on my grass field. I can just see one going right up though the wing. One could make them interchangeable and put them on for the LPad but I think they'd change the trim so no pants.

You will Doc but not until after the Nats-Gramps is in trim and ready so he gets the call this time. This machine may see Muncie in 2016 or 17.
