In the Books for Year 1: CLPA at Triple Tree
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:53:35 AM »
I wanted to thank all the competitors, judges, support personnel, and the Green Hat Gang for putting on the First Bob Shaw Stunt Championships at Triple Tree Aerodrome. We had 33 pilots and a crew of wonderful judges along with the terrific 1/2" cut grass circles. The results can be seen in a post below by Rusty. I received a very nice phone call from one of the competitors who said he could not think of one area where we could have improved the contest. That was worth it all. Special thanks to Will and Melissa Davis for serving up a great lunch for about 50 folks and the supporting cast of the Metroliner Club who made it all possible.

The previous seven days were spent in the training circle where we, the Green Hat Gang, helped over 350 Joe Nall attendees fly our little e-powered RingRats. We had a lot of young kids and a large group of older kids who had not flown CL in many years. That teaching is an incredibly rewarding experience for all of us. While it is challenging running around these folks for one solid week, it is the basis for our existence at Triple Tree. Each year, we get former students returning with their won airplanes.  One of them, 9th grader Alex West, entered the contest and did a great job. We also gave a fully equipped RingRat to a young girl named Savannah who dragged her family back to the CL circles all week to get another chance. She soloed on her third attempt. Her dad sent me a very touching email today thanking us for what we did for his daughter.

Thank you Bob Shaw and Pat Hartness for opening a previously RC-only event to where we are now, an integral and important place to learn and have fun. Fun Central is alive and well.

TERRIFIC JOB, Mark.
You did a great job and everybody seemed to enjoy it immensely.
The weather was perfect, there were minimal incidents and the facilities outstanding!
I hope you repeat it again next year but, how about two days?

Count me in as a judge.

Great contest, my hats off to Mark and all his staff.
I had a good time myself working with Alex on Friday to help get him ready for his 1st c/l contest.
Hope to see him again next year.

After talking with friends that were there flying RC and CL, I decided I'm not missing next year's Joe Nall! I al,OTS went this year but decided not to for practically no reason. Not anymore! The contest and fly in looks too good to pass up for another year!!!

I hope I can make it next year.  Timing was in conflict with a Family event.

Will try and get it on the 2016 calendar.

For those planning to go next year for the first time, allocate an extra day to experience the Joe Nall and see the rest of the Triple Tree Aerodrome.  It is huge, think of what an RC event would be like if done by DisneyWorld. Families and people having fun everywhere. And if you are there on Friday night, do the BBQ for sure.

The nice hotels are about 30 min away but there are hundreds if not thousands of people camping in everything from tents to very expensive motor-homes.

Thank you Mark for once again doing an amazing job of running the CL circles and now the contest. This contest ran as smoothly and efficiently as any other contest I have been to. You and your team did an outstanding job and I cant wait for next year!!!!

Thanks Mark and all those who helped put on a great contest. The control line fraternity has to be some of the nicest people on the planet. It was my wife Karen's first contest to attend and what a wonderful facility and contest for her to be at with a special thank you to Merry Phelps for making her feel like part of the family and explaining to her what was going on. We will be back as many times as you have it. It was worth the trip from Ohio.
Thanks again

The success of this contest was never a question.
The venue, the time of year and the folks running it, what's not to like?
No doubt everyone had a good time and I'm disappointed that I was unable to stop by for a visit.
I know Fitton wimped out but where was John Simpson, is he okay? Oh, and congratulations to my Ole Bud Derek!
I see people my age out there climbing mountains and zip lining and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance

I agree, it went off without a hitch... well visible hitches anyway. I'm sure Mark could name a few if he wanted to. I know he and his Green Hats were about worn to a frazzle when I left late Saturday afternoon.

It was great for me, after spending all Spring working to get into contest mode, then having two of them within reach of my home in two weeks. That was a real boost for my competitive learning curve. And good for me to compete for the first time outside of the cozy confines of my home field.

Thanks to all who made it possible.

34 pilots signed up to fly. 3 of those pilots opted not to fly.
Several Pilots also doubled up as judges.
9/10 states were represented (AL, FL, GA, MD, NC, OH, LA, PA, SC, TX).
9 of the fliers were members of Metrolina Control Line Society.
9 of the fliers have flown in Metrolina Control Line Society contests
13 fliers were new to our area. We welcome them and hope they come back to Triple Tree and one of our 2 (May & Oct) contests.

Have not found out how to keep the columns aligned!

Slidell, I just kinda like saying that. Blame me Allan, I proofed it for the big guy.

Howard, there is no way to align the text in a forum where it will look the same for everyone unless you attach it as a PDF. That's the only standard, even all the different Word variants will mix it up.

Mark , I enjoyed my visit to your meet. The field  gives new meaning to the term Stunt Heavan". Wish it wasn't so far from Albany NY or I would have tried to make the drive. Maybe next year I'll find someone from my area to share the drive (Bill Hummel are you reading this post?). Most memorable for me was opportunity to see some really excellant airplane ( I'm crazy for Bruce's Juno) and  to socialize with you, and Tom Morris, Stan Powell, and make friends with Bruce Jennings. Hope I can be there next year and see Matt Colan. Best regards, Lyle

Here's the middle of the center circle at Triple Tree Aerodrome
34.668176, -81.998317

Luiz, you may have the honors of posting it in Fred's list.
