Where do you get your fuel?

Where do you get your fuel?

I had to order 2 Qts from Brodak as you don't get a hazmat fee for Qts but still cost $25 for half a gallon of fuel.

I thought about doing was someone suggested and just getting RC fuel and doctoring it up.

Thanks
Paul

Paul I'm a fan and user of Byrons Fuel.  If you get to a dealer you can buy gallons very reasonable-$18-22 depending on blend.  My dealer gives me 10% off by the case.  Looks like the nearest dealer to you might be Poplar Bluff.  Maybe two hours.  Worth it to plan a day trip to get a whole season of fuel pretty cheap.

Sig and Brodak are both reasonable in quarts, and better than doctoring up some of "whatever".  Look at the price of all the ingredients when you start adding and mixing.

With the exception of one summer I have burned nothing but Rich's Brew since 1991.  I must confess, though, Randy brings it to the Toledo Show for me so I have no shipping charge.  But...he will mix it any way you want for no extra charge and has great prices.  If you want his contact info, pm me.

I buy all the ingredients and mix my own. It runs well and I can tailor the mix to the given engine.

Paul, I have used 10% Omega bought by the gallon at r/c shops and added castor several times in the past , can't remember if it was 4 or 6 ounces but it worked very well .

Eric Rule at RSM Distribution can supply any mix you want. I have purchased everything from 80% Methanol-20% Castor to 35% Nitro-40% Methanol-25% Castor.

You can make your own for $10-$12 a gallon, assuming you're not using a lot of nitro.  Find a sprint car racer and ask him where to get methanol.  Get nitro from a drag racer.  Get castor oil from Sig or McMaster-Carr.  Get Ucon LB-625 from Henry Nelson if you're going to Brodak (Henry lives just north of Pittsburgh) or Klotz from a motorcycle shop.  If you didn't pay attention in algebra class and can't mix your own, you can go to the Nats and get fuel from Bob Krug if he's still dealing.

I'm planning to add a couple of % to my Sig 10/20. For small amounts like that is it okay to add Rexall drugstore castor? I know for large amounts the more refined Klotz or similar racing fuel is needed, but what about small amounts, any thoughts on that? I do know in the past when I added it to my 1/2A fuel I've seen it collected on the bottom of the empty jug, even though I shook it up well to mix it. So maybe I should warm the fuel before spiking it.

When I go to buy powermaster, I've gone to Graves hobby shop in the Orlando area. they have all the blends I would use in an airplane, and I just picked up a case there last week. I'm not sure if they ship out the fuel, but you could give them a shot if you're looking for Powermaster fuel.

I just asked my LHS to buy a couple gallons of Powermaster on his next order and now the RC guys love it.  The LHS always has 6 gallons on the shelf now.

The hobby shop here in Venice is a Powermaster dealer......he'll order whatever we want, only he includes it on his regular order.....makes the freight reasonable.
He stocks Powermaster 10/18 and I may give it a try....

Just got a shipment of fuel from Sig. No local hobby shops here in north CA. carry it. I use Sig Champion 5% and 10%. Have to order on line. Like others, if you buy quart sizes there is no haz mat fee, but I generally geet 4 gallons at a time and pay the fee.

I use Byron gen2 traditional(castor/syn ) and add castor. The current gallon I have started as 15% nitro, 20% oil. Nitro Rc.com has a fuel workshop where you can figure how much oil to add. My OS46 LA runs good on my mix. Doesn't take much needle change during the flying season. My LHS doesn't have the traditional gen 2 all the time. I do have a gallon ready to mix once this one is done.

Reading all the above comments, I feel very fortunate to live in a town with a hobby shop that still carries a great supply of good fuel.  I can buy any variety of Sig or Cool Power fuel right off the shelf at Eugene Toy & Hobby.  I don't know if they ship fuel, but I know they ship other stuff.  See their listing on the Hobby shops page of Flying Lines. Paul,

There's a HobbyTown USA in Memphis. I just went to our local one in Huntsville and they ordered a case of PowerMaster GMA 10/22 for me. They added it in to their regular order so I won't have to pay any shipping cost.

P.S. They match any internet price and give a 10% discount to AMA members.
Best Regards,
Bill

Unfortunately our HobbyTown went out of business. They had very little airplane stuff. They had gone mostly RC cars and some type of Dungon and Dragon games. They devoted half there floor space for the kids to come in and play a board game. Go figure.

our first HobbyTown did pretty much the same thing, then they folded.
The 2nd one was going great until the guy that owned both of them (one in woodbridge, the other in manassas VA) decided
to take a Gov't job out in CA.  :-[

The couple remaining hobby shops mostly cater to the car/ARF Electrics, and Giant models. Not much in the way of fuel choices
and I have to drive 25 miles now to get any kind of modeling goods. Have to plan up a list before I go now days.
