I don't know what to do with it
« on: April 20, 2015, 08:43:09 PM »
Just on a lark, I bid on an used Enya .19 that appeared to be in very good shape.  Well lo and behold I won on a really low bid.  I have been building and flying for over 50 years but it has been so long since I built a .19 size plane I really don't know what to build to use it on.

Maybe some of you who have a lot of experience with these size planes could recommend something I could put it on.

Thank you
Mike

While y'all are thinking about it, I'm thinking of building up a solid wing trainer for my wife, in which I'm going to put my eBay Enya 19 impulse buy.

So I'll take suggestions.

I have one of Larry Richards Navions I built and put in the closet a while back...that might be the ticket.  Damn, I have planes I have built that I have forgotten about,  that is BAD....I forgot all about that plane.

I have a handful of these and the .15s.  Really powerful and durable.  I have a couple on trainers (Flying Clowns) and a Sig Spad bipe for balloon bust.  The Sig Acromaster or Shark .15 would work.  My plans stash include McFarlands P-38 which might take these or my Veco .19s.  For that matter get another one and build a twin engine Nobler.

Hi Mike, I've got a KK Spectre (the blue and grey one in the photo, powered by a PAW 19 diesel).  Best 'small' model I've flown, and should do fine with an Enya 19.

Mike:

Andy Lee showed up at Brodaks one year with a P-38 powered by 2 Enya 19s.

That'd be a fun one!

Go low-ball another Enya!!

Which version of the Enya 19 do you have, Mike? The 19-V has a little more punch than the 19-IV.

The KeilKraft Spectre's good, though the front end needs a little modification and beefing-up to give it any sort of longevity - Bill Morley's Scimitar is probably a better bet for a nice powerful .19.  If you want an unflapped profile, my favourite would be GMA's English Peacemaker, the one he designed for AeroModeller in, I think, 1959 - I'll never forget my first flight with the one I built in 1960 for a 3.5cc AM35 diesel (the first of many).

Hi Paul,

I agree!  That is exactly the combo I used in 1974!  The Enya 19 flew the Papoose great!  The Papoose was designed for the plain bearing Veco .19 and the Enya was a great fit!

Hi Mike,

Larry might can turn you on to a set of plans.  Worth a try plus putting it in the classifieds might bring some plans out of hiding!  I have seen them on ebay for less than $100 quite a bit.  The Papoose was one of my favorite planes!  Not the greatest stunter in the world but it would easily do the pattern (and I knew nothing about trimming back then! LOL!!) and was just a blast to fly.  Kinda like a shrunken Chief.

I have one of Larry Richards kits for the Little Thunderbird, and plan to use an Enya 19 in it.  I think it will be a perfect combination.  I had one of these many years ago with a Veco 19 and the Veco was marginally too much for the T-Bird (flew on 60 ft lines with no problem).  I think the Enya will be perfect!

The "Little Bird" is a very good flying airplane.  It's at least as good as the big one in reasonable air!.

This is the best ENYA 19-V model I had ever built in '78.
Enya 19-V swang TF white nylon 9x6 or Super Thrust wood 9x5 and was strong enough to pull this 380 sqinch and 30 oz model.

You could always just pack it in a box and ship it to Wildomar, CA. I have a very nice Ron Burn designed profile P51-15 that I would be willing to bolt it on. I am sure that it would enjoy having a nice home here in Southern California where it is always warm, the weather is nice and it is dry.

If you intend to build an old Veco kit using plans make sure they are building plans. The kits came with isometric assembly drawings...probably so you would need a new kit if you wanted to build another.

If I remember correctly the Papoose went through redesign (I think in the mid fifties).

There was no difference between them.  Dumas just bought the tooling and carried on with most of the kits.

If I remember correctly the redesign was done while at Veco. I believe they went to a swept back wing tip and a swept back rudder. Don't know what other mods, if any.

Hi George,

I think you are confusing the Papoose with the Tomahawk.  That is exactly what Veco did to the Tomahawk.   John Brodak actually kitted the second version at first by accident as he called it the original Tomahawk.  He was then told and did bring out the actual 1st Tomahawk version that he now sells.
