VSC27
« on: March 13, 2015, 03:25:06 PM »
VSC27 officially starts Tuesday March 17 but several folks have arrived here in Tucson already.  Many more are expected tomorrow through Sunday 15 March.  Most fliers tend to come early to enjoy the Tucson weather and get in lots of practice flights.
Quite a few flights put up at the field today.  Gerry Phelps (who's been here for several weeks), Jim Lee, Pete Peterson, and Gordon Delaney were most notable today.  Of course the local crew was pretty much out in force also.
Looks like it should be a good year!

Doc, I had a King Sweep ready to go.  I know you built one a couple of years ago.  Probably the only two every built.

How is the wind?

Thwind was tough over the weekend but not too bad this morning.  Came up a bit around 10:00 AM but then dropped to practically nothing around noon.  Should be good tomorrow (Old Time Begins), but admittedly it has been a little erratic this year here in Tucson.

We had a couple of weeks of really nice weather until this past weekend...Forcast is up and down.

What Randy C. said about the weekend winds.  They were brutal, so I didn't bother going to the field.  Some improvement today, although TV reporters are predicting possible rain by mid-week.  So far, at least, it's not as bad as 1998 when we were completely frozen/rained/blown-out by "El Nino".  We're hoping for the best.

That looks a lot better than mine.   Now I some power in the nose and the warps removed, have completed several patterns with it.   Need to get it out more as the take off and landing are what I like about it, besides being a strange looking plane.   Now go break a prop and win Classic with it. #^ #^

The weather was very cooperative today.  Very good flying conditions.  Some excellent flights put up in Old Time.

Unfortunately as the ED for Ignition I didn't get to see very many flights except those in the Ignition Event.  Ignition is always a little different because it seems that about 60% of the battle there is simply getting a complete flight.

First flights today were accomplished by Frank Mcmillan, always a tough competetor in all events with a very beautiful "Madman", and Dale Gleason also made a great flight.
To show how tough this event really is all competitors that got flights today had at least one "attempt" before getting an official.
The test continues tomorrow for everybody's second official.

I'll try to get some photo's tomorrow.

Weather is predicted to be not so good tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with Joe Gilbert, one of our Tulsa Gluedobbers. He won glow old time stunt and the Ringmaster event today
using a Brodak .25 powered Ringmaster in both events. The Ringmaster weighed 23 ounces.

Way to go, Joe!

I think he said the Frank McMillan won ignition old time stunt, and Dale Gleason was second, and Jim Lee was third.

Yes, Joe is entered in Classic flying his Gypsy, a gorgeous airplane by the way...some very strong competition there!

Sorry about not having any pictures to post...camera battery went dead.  Charging it tonight.

It rained late this evening and has become colder...but remember here in Tucson 55 is considered COLD.  The field will be very wet tomorrow.  Won't make much difference for the paved circles but the grass (practice circles) will be soggy!

Still overcast tonight could rain a little tomorrow.

I met Joe and his wife for the first time at the NATs last year, and they couldn't be more pleasant. Joe is a tough competitor, so he may not be done winning things this week.

Ditto. ???

Sorry Guys...My camera took a dump today.  I'm trying to find one to borrow...I'm working on mine, may be able to get it working for tomorrow.  If not I'll try to get someone else to post some pictures.

Some very good flights put up today.  On top right no is Jim Hoffman and his USA 1 with a 594...Really great flight...I'm sure some folks will try harder tomorrow.  Joe Gilbert put up a nice flight also with his Gypsy but not quite as high as Jims.  Two more days for three flights total and Best of Two for score!

John Callentine's Sea Fury is incredible to watch in the air as is Frank Mcmillan' Martin Baker.  A liberal sprinkling of new planes this year also.

44 entries (I think) in Classic this year.

The Japanese contingent consisting of Kaz Minato, Marsaru Hiki, and a new gentleman whose name escapes me at the moment (I'll post it tomorrow...Apologies for my memory) all had absolutely gorgeous new airplanes and flew very well of course.

It was very wet this morning but dried out early and warmed up to typical Tucson Temperatures in the 70's by 10:00 AM  winds were light to non-existent.  It rained very hard late this afternoon so it will be wet again tomorrow but no rainfall expected.

It's sure been great to see everyone again this week, although I haven't been out there every day.  Sure never thought the VSC would last THIS long, but am glad it has.  Jim Hoffman and his crew are doing a fine job.

Would love to tell you who's leading in Classic, but that might be seen by the judges - which is verboten.  At any rate, it'll all be over tomorrow: best two-of-three.....and there's a large crowd bunched-up right behind the leader, so it's still anyone's game.  Should be a real shootout if the weather holds.  (Today's weather was beautiful.)

First place in Classic Stunt was won by an incredibly consistent Kaz Minato with scores of 602.5, 602.0, and 612.  All flown in front of three different sets of judges.

First place in Super Seventies was won by Masaru Hiki with very consistent results and the hardest cleanes corners I have ever witnessed.
Hiki San was flying a Halmark by Gene Shaeffer.  Mr Shaeffer was known for very hard clean corners flying this airplane but what I saw was very reminiscent of those days gone by.

My hat is off to both of these extremely nice Gentlemen for their stellar performances.

My apologies for not being able to provide photos this year and my thanks to Bill Lee for picking up the slack with his facebook postings.

I was lucky to be chosen to  fly the warmup flights for the Judges all three days and had great fun doing it.   First time I've ever tried to deliberately make errors in maneuvers and some were whoppers on the first two days.  Calmed it down today and mostly just flew my normal pattern which typically has enough errors... y1 LL~ LL~

Mr. Jim Hoffman ran a very efficient and clean contest and deserves a great "Thank You" from all involved.  This is one very organized Gentleman!

Also worthy of note is the performance by our very own Lou Wolgast for finishing a very creditable Eithth place in Classic Stunt with His "Humongous" an Old Time stunt airplane designed in 1948 by Ted Snow.  He also garnered 19 appearence points for this beautiful rendition.  This was in very tough competition and his performance was incredible.
