eBay item number: 201293457511 is even more interesting.  Do people who bid $52.00 +postage for a kit that's obviously missing 2/3rds of it's content, realize what they're buying?  I guess maybe they're just after the box, the cowl, the decals, or some specific part, but it still seems a bit silly.  Last I checked the small Sterling Stearman wasn't even a big ticket item when it's complete.  D>K

eBay item number: 111600965833 is fun too.  $355 for a NIB ST 60.  Um, Ok.  Even if we give the ST 60 credit as a viable stunt engine, where does that value go the first time it gets run?   ???

As a general trend, it seems that C/L related stuff on Ebay is going down in value, but there are still the head shakers.

That was about what they were going for in the early 90's when the usual suspects went on a jihad about how tuned pipe engines were the tool of the devil, etc. That seemed to somehow occur between the 93 NATS (where some notables said there should be a separate class for ST60s and wood props because they were uncompetitive) and the 93 TT (where the same notables went apesh*t caliming the judges were cheating, tuned pipe engines were a scam and didn't work, and their promoters were "the biggest con men" in the world). So you "better get an ST60 at $400 before they were all gone, we have several in stock but you might miss out if you don't act now...."

That's in the space of a month, roughly.

Then they got a Saito distributorship, and ST60s were suddenly passe'.

This wouldn't be the same individual who barbecued a 40VF as a sign of protest?

This wouldn't be the same individual who barbecued a 40VF as a sign of protest?

You are in the right general area, although I have various versions of that story.

It might have been a protest, but one of the stated reasons was because, as "everyone knew", the 40VF would "blow the front seal" in about 20-30 flights. Never mind the fact that "everyone" comprised about 10 people in New Jersey, and the rest of us got thousands of flights out of them. In fact, I ran one of the "blown front seal" motors for roughly 10 years with great success. It's in the backup airplane right now, and if I had to do one flight with no practice to save my life, I would probably choose that airplane and engine because despite the fact that it hasn't been run in 10 years.

The real issue appeared to be erroneous set up, and attempting to run the exhaust through a 18" arrowshaft with an ID of about 1/4". And of course the "cult of personality" demanded that no one ever try anything different from the Royal Proclamations, whether it worked or not.

One of the more frustrating things I saw was at the 93 NATs, and a small group of individuals running 40 and 46VFs couldn't get a reliable run, while Dave and I were getting in about 40 flights a day, like metronomes. The guys would come by, complain that they overran, underran, had flameouts, etc. and we asked them how they had it set up. It was clearly wrong, and we would suggest changes, but no, "so and so told us that if we changed the pipe length they would break my arm" and that sort of thing. Than go back and have the same issues until they got dropped out. This includes people who should certainly have known better, and that failed to qualify because they couldn't get two complete flights.

This was one of my first experiences with the "you can tell people exactly what to do and they will go off and do the opposite" effect. You can say exactly what and why, give direct line by line instructions, and if you follow it to the letter, it will work. But no, a significant fraction of people will go off and do something complete different, and stick with it despite many obvious problems. This was the era of Paul *blowing everybody away* year after year, while a huge fraction of the competitors seemed to *completely ignore* what he was doing, aside from whining about the judging. Some people STILL haven't learned their lesson and still fail to grasp or be willing to admit their ideas were wrong and demonstrated to be wrong.

Sound like way back when my pilot and I were getting into F2C competition.  Wright & Dunkin would tell us that we would get all kinds of help on set ups.  Especially if it was different than theirs which is what we were using.   Even when they changed some thing to try we were told we could try it too.   If it worked fine,  if not, file it away as it might work later on.  But, when someone is having success with a set up and it is working it is worth trying to see if it helps.

Or alternately when it is clearly not working you shouldn't stick with it. For the next 20 years while getting more and more frustrated with the results.

There are certainly some variations in "feel" required from pilot to pilot, but I think it is *far* less than commonly imagined. The engines are even less variable- if you set up your PA61 like David, it will run very close to the way his does. This is another thing different from the 4-2 break and Fox/McCoy slag motor" era, or even quality engines like the ST46/60. You hardly get any variation from copy to copy.

Just an FYI:

If you copy an eBay link you can shorten it by deleting everything after the question mark..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OS-25-FP-S-NIB-/231480648980?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35e5526514

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OS-25-FP-S-NIB-/231480648980

If this works like I expect, both links will take you to the same auction.
