Derringer 60 and Derringer 46
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:43:10 PM »
There are 2 Derringers. One is Derringer 60 (Aeromodeller September 1993) by Henk de Jong, a top Dutch control line stunt flyer. The other is Derringer 46 by Bob Whiteley, the 1978 U.S. Nats open winner. Anyone can shed any light on these 2 designs like the differences in their flying characteristics, their strong and not so strong points, which design is optimized for what kind of flying style, flying conditions etc etc

I built and flew one of Bob Whitely's Derringers; used a ST 51.  Outstanding stunter!!! Very "friendly", huge capabilities, made me look much better than I was!
Something special about the way it turned; was "magic" with the perfect pivot and always stopped right where it was supposed to.  Can't recall the weight, but it was not on the light side!  I think the airfoil gave the ship a wonderful "feel" all around the hemisphere, and allowed near-perfect control by a mediocre flyer.  That
one was from an RSM kit, and I will eventually build another.  Hope this helps!

Even though one might consider Bob Whitely as one of those blessed with a golden arm, there is probably some other good reason that he won the Nats with his Derringer..  Oh, I don't know for sure, but it probably had something to do with the fact that his airplane flew pretty good.

Hi Casey,

Henk made a habit for a while to upsize some popular models to .60 size and did a great job.  2 others he did were the Juno and Cobra.  I don't think a lot of them were built in the US since there were no kits available.  They should be excellent flying models!

The Derringer 46 in the picture looks like it is set up as a trike gear , or is that just a pigment of my homaginization? The current plans show a conventional tail dragger type set up.

Hi Gordon,

It IS a trike gear.  I bet Alfadawg (Bob Whitely) could tell you all about it!

Check out my remarks about Whitley's Derringer in the 'Ice cream cone" airfoil thread on the engineering board.
