Family Building Season - Typhoon Building Thread

This has been a special year for me. The whole family has been helping me build my new stunt ships  

Emma (who is now 5 months old) started keeping me company in the shop and now she hands me lost foam pieces when I need them. My wife and I have been teaching Emma to fall a sleep on her own so to pass the time Kayla has been cutting ribs. Helps keep her mind off the loud noise from the other room... who would have thought cutting ribs is therapeutic. We have now made 3 sets of lost foam ribs.... Now I need to build them  .

The plane is 700 sq. in. and ready to fly before color is 50.5 oz with tank engine and all. Hoping to stay under 60 oz but we will see.

The plane is Bob Hunt and my design with Billy Werwage's numbers from the p-47. Bob drew the side view and I finished the rest. As Bob would say its a "Should have been scale" version of the Hawker Typhoon. I have always liked the look of that plane. I have built it to take a RO Jett .65 or PA 61 though Bob would have liked to see a battery in it

I'm wrestling with the IC vs E. decision. This season it was budget and familiarity question. I didn't want to go into this season completely reliant on new technology. But with that said I do have Igor's timer, ESC and accelerometer for testing this summer. We will see what happens next season.

Thought I would share some photos of my progress. I have most of the color painted. Still going to add a few little things like nav lights and other nonsense. Then I will ink the panel lines and hope to be done in a week or two.

 In a couple of the photos it looks like you've got a profile version sitting in the rack? What's the scoop on that one?

Must be the angle but it's the plane I flew this past season. It's what I now call the stregaphoon. Basically a Strega wing stylized to kinda look like a hawker typhoon. The new phone is much lighter and is built around Werwages p-47. Everything but the cowl is molded so it looks more scale like with a much rounder fuse.

Here you go Doug. Its just galvanized 1 1/4 pipe mounted to the ceiling. Up until a few weeks ago I always used the free standing one but my dad uses it to paint "Real" airplanes.  He welded the mounting fixture for me a while back.

Been working hard this week to get the new plane done. I realized that I have 13 different colors on this plane... All dope.

After I put the first coat of clear the plane is at 56 ounces ready to fly. Very happy with this. I sanded most of the clear off over the last few nights and will touch up the sand throughs and then do the remainder of the panel lines and shading. I'm trying to be patient but I'm started to get tired of this process...

Here is an update on the planes progress. I have completed the touchups, inking, shading and clear coat. Feel like its coming together. I have been watching a lot of Windy finishing DVD's so I have borrowed a lot of his techniques.

Next step is to do some more minor touchups, the decals and a final coat of clear.

Side note: I got impatient with the 4 inches of snow on my flying surfaces so I cleared 1/3 of a circle. Going to go flying today. Ready for spring...

The trouble with you stunt people is lack of mathematical precision.  Somehow you fly accurately, but otherwise you get pretty sloppy.  Just how elder must a person be to get respect?  The answer is anyone born after 1946 does not need to be shown respect.  To be specific, a young person should show no remorse in posting a higher stunt score than anyone born after 1946.  Having a higher score than someone born before 1947 is disrespectful and may be grounds for disqualification.  It's in the AMA General rules somewhere.

I got seven flights in today Going to be a good season.

I have been playing around with a PA 61 a buddy gave me to use. Runs great in a solid 4 stroke and breaks into a light 2 just as I want it to. The only issue on the rounds (specifically round 8's) the engine does a funny rich burp when the plane switches from the outsides to the inside. I have ran this tank height with my RO Jett all season and never had the issue... I tried running the engine a tad leaner and that didn't help then switch to a thunderbolt 4 stroke plug from an RC Long. Thought getting rid of the idle bar would help... but it didn't change anything. Any ideas? Keep shimming the tank?

Steve, its a standard metal Uniflow and I'm running Power Master 15% nitro and 18% oil.

Hmm... 15% nitro with snow on the ground...wow... sounds like it's running a little cold, and that you might still be chasing microscopic tank shim that you otherwise would never notice when flying in "normal" warmer weather.

I would try a couple things... 1st, go down in nitro, but only go down incrementally, like mix some 10% and 15% to get 12.5%, etc,  before you try straight 10%. I say this because a 2% shift in nitro is actually quite a large swing  and you might hit magic in the smaller resolutions.

Also, 2nd, try an Enya #3, they are super hot, and the clearance seems about perfect for distance to the sweet spot, that has always worked a treat as my winter plug. Just make sure your glow driver fit's it and come's off easy.

As far as shimming the tank goes, it might be hard to quantify if it's close and only effects the run that way and in those conditions. You might have someone time the middle 4 inverted laps of your 6, and then time 4 upright laps after it's had 2 laps to settle down. Then time 3 inside loops versus 3 outsides. Even at that, it might be hard to quantify, but that's the best way I've found, other than just going by my best guess.

The .61 is a powerful beastie, and a fresh one with a good seal can be a little extra sensitive to ambient conditions and nitro...

Ahhh.. got it. Personally, I'd avoid the larger venture on the 61, if you have a #12 or 13 in it already, that's more than enough power for anything up to Patternmasters in the 70 ounce range, and it will just mess with fuel draw, consumption, and the run characteristics. etc. If the run is close to where you like it, just tweak small stuff with Nitro, prop & that Enya #3.
