Rachel's new ride...
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:14:51 PM »

Today at our MPP January club building session Rachel Sandberg and dad Keith started in on her new Brodak P-40 kit. It will have a brand new FP.15 for power, (thanks D!) and will be all ready to go come spring. Here are few pics of Rachel and her "Support Team" at work... ;D

Another young lady to watch grow up in this hobby.  I've lost count how many young ladies and men I have grown up in this model plane world.

The airplane is larger than the child.  Do you have a fanny pack that you can stuff with lead for her first flight?
AMA 64232

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Plane looks great and she is a cutie.   With the right prop she should be able to handle the plane okay.

She does great with her Challenger .15 so this one should be no problem. She's also gotten in some flights on a Shark 402 with a Fox .35. y1

What I most enjoy about this story is knowing that her Dad spends a lot of time with Rachel, and makes her a priority in life.  Keith is a great guy, and we need more fathers like him.  And kudos to all, like Wayne, who add to the support system.

Rachel will fly it like a her Dad flys. Smooth and confident. She is "all business" when she enters the circle.
Watch her in the video below at 7:13. She is chatty outside the circle but once she steps in the circle the game is afoot. A couple of "un-huhs" and her focus is evident.

Could be the marketing ploy we've needed all along to attract new fliers! Probably have to use Twinkies though, to have the necessary shelf life. ;D

I really enjoy watching your videos and the fun you guys and the little lady are having.   I can tell she is Dad's pride and joy.   Maybe this summer I can get the grand kids out flying more often.

Things have been moving along quite well on the P-40 project. In between some prep coats of clear dope along with a little sanding Rachel is starting to work out some paint ideas now. It doesn't appear as though "subtle" is going to be a consideration... ;D

Got an update today on Rachel's new P-40 build. She's been diligently working away and has now gotten the fuselage painted. From the beginning Keith has made a point to get her involved "hands on" with every step of this build. I'd say teaching a 7 year old how to use sandpaper is an accomplishment in itself. He says she's really having fun twirling the wrenches too and has "test mounted" the engine having it on and off a whole bunch of times. It sounds like the pride level has really been growing as things have been progressing. It also sounds like she's gotten really attached to the model, something I think most of us can relate to. The next big step is for iron on covering on the wing which will likely happen at our club building session next Sunday the 1st, that's assuming she puts it down for that long.  ;D

...a little behind here on Rachel's P-40 update, she's been moving right along!  o2oP

At last Sunday's MPP club building session Rachel and dad Keith warmed up the iron and got the wing all covered. A few other small details were tidied up after that and the new P-40 is almost ready to go. The only things left now are to mount the fuel tank and connect the plumbing, then tie up the leadouts. Like all the rest of us up here I'm sure she's already counting the days 'til spring! ;D

Is that a P-51 on the table in the background? Whose is that? It looks mighty sporty.
