Brodak P40
« on: December 01, 2014, 08:19:35 PM »
Started my winter project just an arf but wanted to try some new tricks I have seen on here. New never put together p-40 stripped, Tom Morris 4" bellcrank and leadouts. Stock horns, with carbon fiber pushrods and ball joints. But what is different for me is the hinges. Old school over and under the full length of flaps just doped down. They laid down real nice then put the silkspan over it with butrate dope. Did not know what went first hinges or covering so I went with the hinges. I have not had much luck with barrel hinges, either a big gap, not enough or just crooked. I am using white primer then Duplicolor black and red with DuPont chromatic 2 part clear. Which is also all new to me just usually used dope or lustercoat. Power will be a new LA 46. I am not doing a build thread Just trying to learn how to put something together that flies good and looks fair so any criticism is welcome. I still have to move up a couple pay grades before I have to worry about appearance points n~.
Thanks
Rick

All of the P40 arf's I've seen have been good fliers. Nice job.

I just finished building a Brodak P-40 kit. 48.6 ounces, .46LA, APC 11.5 x 4. Monokote wings and tail, Dupli-Color white fuselage. Russian winter camo scheme. One thing about the paint, the directions say get all the coats on within an hour or wait 7 days. This is Gospel. Even the same can over the same color will attack and wrinkle if applied after the hour time. All colors followed by Dupli-Color clear within the hour is fine. I use acrylic enamel. Also I used the outside flap extension piece as a wing trim tab. 3 degree wedges under the engine, 3/8" balsa cheek tripler, cored fuselage. I've got 20 trim flights on it now, yesterday, 12/1/14, and the day before and it flys stable but a very hard corner I'm trying to trim out.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Is duplicolor clear fuel proof?

The Dupli-Color acrylic enamel clear and most colors seem to be fuel proof. I've never tested it by pouring raw fuel on a painted surface but I use up to 10% nitro and never had any problems. I sprayed the clear coats at 2 pm and flew the plane at 11 am the next day. No problems with the paint. I have used Dupli-Color engine enamel paints covered with the clear and still no problems with fuel attacking it.

It is a rip stop nylon I believe. I got it from Tom Morris. I cut the strips about 3/4" wide left them long then trimmed the length after the first coat of dope. They are not invisible but they look and feel better than my last attempt at barrel hinges.

I got some paint on it this weekend. It turned out fair, in dim light and at 15 feet LL~. How you guy's turn out such beautiful models is just crazy. This is my best so far I just need to keep building and practicing. There are a lot of firsts for me on this one. Spray can duplicolor and DuPont chromabase 4 to 1 top coat. I did end up with some "dry" spots that I hope will buff out. And also first attempt at panel lines. I think they came out OK  they make a big difference in the overall look of the plane.

Rick,

That is a beautiful airplane! I'd be mighty proud to turn out one as nice as yours.

Well I just weighed it. Way better than I thought. 40 oz on the dot. This is minus 1.5oz starting wingtip weight, fuel tank, and adjustable tank mount. Hopefully I will not have to add any to balance.

Rick, the plane looks great.   Years ago we had a gentleman join our club and wanted to try control line.  His first attempt at finishing had me wanting to hide my planes.  His next one was even better.   I asked how long he had been doing this and he told it was his first.   Said he just read some articles on finishing and asking our own guru, Jim Lee about finishing.   It takes time and patience in reality and doing what you are told.

40 ounces all up and ready to fly? It's a fairly large model, might wanna check that again. :)

Thanks guys
I have done a few profiles over the years with dope but not sprayed anything. It is definitely a learning experience. I would probably benefit from doing more than one project at a time so I can take my time on finish instead of rushing the next step. Just move over to the other plane while it dries or whatever. I would like to do a full fuselage plane yet this winter. I have never done one. I have a Legacy 40 I would like to tie into.
