New Goodyear Margaret June
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:33:59 PM »
This is my new Sport Goodyear, Margaret June. For you air racing fans, this plane was previously "Bullitt" and "Cool Runnings". I just shot primer on it today. To try to stir up interest in this event for the 2015 NATS, I am working on plans and a construction article, hopefully to be published in Model Aviation. If they don't want it, I will make it available myself. I am shooting for having everything done by the end of the year.

Point the hole straight down the throat of the venturi. We break in and fly with the same prop, the APC 6.5x5.0. If you can't get one locally, any 7x4 will be OK. You don't need a slobbery rich, slow break in. Run at a rich two cycle then lean it out for 10-15 seconds at a time to heat it up. I'm sure you can find a more detailled procedure somewhere on StuntHangar.

Awesome.  Hope MA picks up your work. It would be nice to see a C/L racing build for a change.

Plane looks great.  I need a new Sport Good Year.   I'm still trying to get some engines also.   If MA doesn't pick up on it, I would like a set of plans.  Thanks DOC Holliday

I'm with Doc. Not much racing around my neck of the woods but that plane is so pretty I would build one just 'cause I like flying fast, cool airplanes. Put me down for a  set if MA passes (maybe if it was made out of cardboard or styrofoam they might show more interest). ;D HB~> 8)

The Li'l Quickie is a great airplane. That is what Don Cranfill and Richard Oliver fly. The Plum Crazy Cassutt from Flying Models (mid 1970's) is another good one. It already has external controls, and a shutoff similar to mine. You can't go wrong with either one.

As shown, the hinges aren't hinges. They're music wire "staples" to hold the elevator during painting. They will ultimately be 1/2A dacron flying line sewn hinges.

This is a different airplane, but the control system is the same. I am using the same hex shaped buttons to connect the lines to the bellcrank as I use on my carrier planes. It has been previously described in the carrier section.

Is that considered an exposed bellcrank if the rules say it must be exposed. Thinking of doing something like that on a proto but didn't want to risk a DQ.

MM

Walt, the rules for Sport GY are quite explicit regarding the control system. I don't know what the proto rules say, and I certainly would not base a proto model on the Sport GY rules.

Regards,

Bill

From the DMAA website:

MODEL SPECIFICATIONS FOR MAGNUM/ ASP ENGINES ONLY: Lines may attach directly
to the bellcrank, or leadouts may be used. The bellcrank and leadouts or lines must be external to the
normal contours of the wing. The line/ leadout guide(s) may be inset into the wing, but shall cover no
more than 1/2" of the lines or leadouts. The bellcrank may pass through the fuselage but must be visible
and not fully enclosed. The pushrod and elevator control horn shall not be recessed or enclosed in the
fuselage. Fuel shutoff linkages are exempt from any of the above regulations.

Build one! Lead the charge. Stir up some interest. Better yet, build two, hand someone else the handle, and there you go, instant race! If you really want to get 'em hooked, let the other guy fly the faster plane!

Come to one of our contests. We always need pilots. Of course if you want to build one of your own, so much the better. Talk to Allen DeVeuve. He was going to team up with Lester to fly some racing, then Lester got busy with a new job and a new baby. Allen wants to do the pitting, so if you want to fly you can probably get something going.

Say Bill, any chance for details on the fuel shut-off? The ones I use incorporate a separate on a "U" shaped aluminum bracket and the cable activited trigger is on the top. This set-up looks cleaner, lighter, and just as reliable. Can't make Dallas to race but there are still a few guys in the SF Bay area doing it. 8)

It's super simple, and made from easily obtained materials. The drawing is lifted straight off the Margaret June plans. Don't be confused, though. The last picture is a different airplane.
