Sterling Starfire F94C Plans
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:08:05 AM »
Anyone know where I can get a set of plans for the Sterling Starfire F94C Profile?  Numerous searches turned up nothing.

I have a copy of the Sterling instructions that came in the GSM kit.  Maybe Barry Baxter has full size plans.

The F-94 did not have a full size plans. Like most of the Sterling offerings it had a plan with drawings of the model in various stages of construction and a lot of written instruction. as has been noted this was to deter anyone from using plans to build another one.
Larry made a really nice copy of the model with much better wood then any Sterling kit ever saw. I don't think that there would be a lot of them out there but those who have them know what I mean about his quality.

I bought the F94C kit from Larry several years ago and it was a beautiful kit.  There were no full size plans in the kit.  There were drawings and instructions for assembling the kit.  I crashed it a couple of years ago.

The F94C used exactly the same wing as the Sterling Navion minus the wing tips.  Bill Schmidt did a nice set of plans for the Navion; they were included with the Dare Navion kit.  Perhaps Bill might have something?

That was a neat-looking model, but very nose heavy even with a Fox .35, and the thin wing didn't help.  Mine didn't fly nearly as well as several of the other Sterling profiles.

My plans are from Larry's kit, so they might not be what your looking for. I agree on the nose heavy, it looked great but not to hot on flying. I still have mine although it is repaired it didn't turn very well.

The Navion and the F-94 were not kitted that long by Sterling a few years at best. It gives some impression of the kits popularity back in the day. I had it and yes it needed tail weight but properly balanced it was fun to fly. Still have a kit from Larry Richards collecting dust in the collection. I'll probably never get to it but it does have some pleasant memories from long ago.

The photo has taken a beating over the years, but here's my Starfire.  I had a Navion kit too - knowing how poorly they flew, I used the wing in my own "Hawker Something".  Landing gear in the wing; it was fun to fly but still had a thin wing.     y1

Hi Guy,s,
If someone has a kit of this model, I could copy the parts and draw a full size plan.  This model has a very special place in my past.  My brother built this plane (his last model) when we were kids and loved it.  Louie pasted away a few years ago and we talked many times about this model and how he would like to build one again.  It flew pretty good for what it was (a Ringmaster in sheep's clothing).  Louie's was powered by McCoy .35 with Garish 3 blade gray nylon prop and a perfect 4 ounce profile tank.  I know this is really old school stuff and a long way from being as serious stunt model, but what the heck, it was a ton of fun!!

Later,
Mikey

Mikey, All,

I have the hobby fasteners kit of the plane - it is pre Richards kit (I think) - I'll try tracing the parts onto a sheet of paper and send it to you - if you need the kit we'll have to figure something out .

It actually would be a fun project, and I almost did build the one I had. I like the pic of Dennis's above, I think it's the only completed one I've ever seen. If I had built mine I would have stretched the fuse about 2 or 3 inches. I thought it would have looked much better and it wouldn't have hurt the performance any, might've even helped some.

Hi Joe,
The tracings should be all I need to draw a set of plans, a copy of the kit plan (old Sterling plan) should provide the remaining info needed.  I Don't really need the kit, besides it a collectors kit now.  Some laser cut parts would be helpful to make sure it all fits together properly.
Thank you Joe for your help.

Here are some pictures from my F-94 Starfire built from one of Larry Richards kits. His kit came with the straight tail so I used the kit instructions that show a top view and drew a sweptback elevator like in the original kit.

OK - I have the kit - I'll start tracing tonight - it will be slightly oversize from tracing but should be easy to cut parts from it. The fuselage may be split (because of sheet size) but everything will hopefully be accurate.

P.S. I would love to see the Laser Kit for this plane. The One I have (It was from AJ free Flight Service) has premium wood in it. I'll trace L.e and T.e. outlines as well.

When I built mine I wanted the same gas tank as in the plan. I took the dimensions and this is how I built it out of a new paint can I bought at the Auto Paint Store.

I've got the kit traced out now and will be sending the plans out probably early next week after visiting Staples, Post office etc.

Anyone who wants a copy of the tracings send me you Address and I'll get you a copy of the plans.

I'll be making notes on the drawing tonight as to grain direction, sheet width, etc. Because this is a AJ Free Fight kit of the original sterling kit the wood is thicker and lighter tnan the original sterling kit . Typical 3/16 instead of 1/8 wood as an example.

Hey McCoy,
Juan is sending me a tracing of the parts but I still need tracings of the wing ribs.  It would be a good idea to compair the copies from Juan and you to make sure I have the correct drawings.
