Super Ringmaster, O T legal?
« on: October 31, 2014, 06:34:58 AM »
I have only flown old time stunt one time and know nothing about what is and what is not legal. Is the Super Ringmaster O T legal? I am doing a product review on the Super Ringmaster for MA and would like to put that information in the article. Thanks for your help.

Blessings
Allen

I'm pretty sure it is not.  Maybe someone from the Brotherhood of the Ring can tell you for sure.

No it is not.  It came out about the time I was just starting into this CL stuff in mid 50's.   I know it was not before DEC 52.   I always thought it one beautiful airplane until I seen the Thunderbird.

What Doc says!

As far as I know the only Ringmaster that is old time legal is the original S-1 (not the S-1A). I suppose the Williamson Ringmaster may be old time legal but that plane is a whole different model from the Ringmasters derived from Matt Kania's S-1 Ringmaster (such as the Super Ringmaster, The Baby, The Jr., The Sportster. and so on).

The Williamson Ringmaster was published before the cutoff date, so it's definitely OT legal.

But it shares nothing with the Stirling Ringmasters other than the name.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Since the Super Ringmaster has been brought up, did anyone else see the ad on page 105 in the November issue of Model Aviation? Micro Scale Model Planes has a kit out, available in glow or electric, R/C or U/C. Not cheap though, $129.95

Looks like that kit has a sheeted LE. An improvement for sure, but that version should not be legal for anything.

The Sterling Super Ringmaster used the same wing as the original S1 Ringmaster.  No LE sheeting, no top and bottom spars. The laser cut model from the link provided is not the same model as the Sterling Super Ringmaster.

From the Micro Scale Model Planes website:
Super Ringmaster Revisited by Bob Clauss

"...It was obvious that the model outline had to be exactly as Matt Kania had designed it for Sterling. However, we also wanted to incorporate the wing design I did for the S1A Ringmaster which builds on a flat building board resulting in a true wing that is not only stronger but lighter than the original."

The S1A Ringmaster had a different wing from the S1 and was released in the late 1980's in the Estes days. That wing had the C-tube LE and a different airfoil from the Sterling Ringmaster and Superringmaster.

The S1A Ringmaster is not OTS legal, and a Super Ringmaster that features that wing is a bastardization of the design. It may fly better than the original, but it is not a recreation of that design and should not be legal for any nostalgic events.

Curt

Ps: Congrats Matt on your win!

Agreed.  The RSM kit is Classic-legal.  Eric's products meet the rules, whether OTS, Classic or modern, and are authentic replicas in every respect.
