List of Nats winning combat engines
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:45:33 PM »
I'm looking for a list of nats winning combat engines and can't seem to find one.  I've gone through old mags and to my dismay, often the names of the winners weren't even listed.  The Top Flite ads where they used to list winners who used Top Flite props were more helpful than anything.  Maybe some one can help me.  I'm looking for fast combat. Below is what I've found to date.  F=Fox, J=Johnson, T=Torpedo,  displacement, Listed are Jr, Sr, Open

1952 T19, F35, T32
1953 F29, F35, F35
1954 F35, T35, T35 (THIS WAS THE YEAR SHIRELY ANN AUSTIN WON)
1955 T35, F35, F35
1956 T35, T35, T35
1957 T35, F35, F35 This was the first year for the Fox Combat Special, but I don't know it that was used to win  this year
1958 F35, T35, J35
1959 F35, F35,  J35
1960 J35, J35, J35
1961 T35, OS 35, J35
1962 J35, J35, J35CS
1963 J35, J36BB, J36BB
1964 ST29, F36X(Stroker), ST35
1965 ST35, ST35, ST35

HELP!

I saw a list of winners somewhere on the Web.  I can tell you that the 1970 Open winner used a Supertigre G.21 .35.  I can probably help with others if you can't find them.

I have a list of winners on the MACA page, but no engine info. I would be interested in this list also.

I do know Riley won several NATS, and he only used Johnsons until they went out of business. After that he only used Foxes.

Bernie Varnau used ST C35s on his Motivators in Senior at the '71 Nats (1st place). I was there and bought one of the modified ST heads he had. Gosh, that sure was a long time ago...

Dave Bush (L, second place) with his "Dinosaur" and Bernie Varnau (R, first place) with his "Motivator" after the final match of the 1971 Nats Senior Combat.

I'm pretty sure after 62 all there was competing in combat was Tigers and Foxes. I saw a couple of TWA's but I dont think any ever made it to a win at the Nats. Then Nelsons dominated after their introduction.

I won the 1980, and 1984 NATS using a TWA.  Pr'olly the first ABC combat winner.

Bob,
You are right, won my first nats in 56 using green head torp.......  Hi Johnson cornered me after the win and offered free engines if I would
run them......being a poor boy from west Texas I jumped at the offer.  Good choice, as they turned out to be the best engine for combat at the time..
I also became his R & D man which was good for us both..........RW

PS: thanks for the QR kit

Wow I don't get over here much.  This picture!  I was third that year and flew David Bush just a few minutes earlier for second and third.  At over four minutes it was the longest match anyone could remember.  I flew for the CMI Factory team with a Guillotine and G21  .35.

Dave, believe it or not I vaguely remember that match. I was so impressed with the way your Guillotine turned I built a few for myself. Speed wasn't everything!

Chad you must have  great memory!  I only remember how exhausted I was...at 17!  Seemed that match lasted hours.   The Guillotine was/is a great airplane.  The calculus  was that your opponent  was locked into a small sphere with you and couldn't get away from you so if you could outturn  him you should have an advantage.  Usually it worked.  Just had to wait for the moment he tried to follow you through a turn.  I have one now I built for fun with a metal uniflow  tank and good McCoy .35.  It cuts out briefly on most turns.  The fuel flow within the engine can't quite handle the turns.  I found a new Fox .36X and may build another one but will go with a metal tank on pressure and flat prop.  Might be able to get it down to 75 mph.......

Dave

Addendum..  A 10% smaller and 10% larger versions were tried.  The smaller one flew pretty much like everything else.  The bigger one would crush the wing ribs on turns.  You could here the covering 'pop' with air pressure compressing the ribs when it snapped back.
