I seem to remember that he had Parkinson's disease.

He was last active in stunt hangar on July 15, 2009. (under the name of Hoyt Hawkins)

He was last active on stunt hangar on July 5, 2011. (under the name of Warhawk)

He was on at least one USAF modeling team. (1971?)

I wanna think that I remember the name but can't relate it to anything. Did he ever come to our contest? Just can't quite dig it out of the old memory bank.

I call Hawk from time to time.....his wit is the same, but he'll be the first to admit that his body is failing.
He had two "deep brain" surgeries a few years ago....they improved him for a while, but then he regressed.
I get email from him almost daily. They run from "praise the lord" Christian stuff to very obscene to super right wing.
When I call I always announce that I am calling of Barack Obama.
You gotta love the guy that can keep smiling through all he has been through.

We're all like that actually, Dan...see, we can remember names like Eisenhower and Kennedy...Douglas MacArthur and George Patton....but unless they won a flashy medal or had a book written about them, we seldom remember the grunts in the trenches who also served to win the wars. A lot of we C/L grunts will also gradually fade away.   ;)

The last time I seen him was at a NATS years ago when we had pictures taken with Sparky, Hoyt and myself.

I emailed Hoyt Hawkins and he answered back. With his permission, here's what he told me.

To make a long story short, I fell in April 2012, and it resulted in a broken back in two places. Surgery was not successful, and my rehab was further complicated by the Parkinson's disease diagnosed in 1973 while I was on active duty in the USAF.

I stopped flying any type of airplane in 2006, but did play golf everyday until my fall. I am wheelchair bound and can walk with the aid of a walker for short distances with my wife walking behind me in case I fall...which is nearly always backwards.

Sincerely,
Hawk

I got some emails from "Hawk" sometime this weekend. It's like Mr. Peabody said...a wide variety of topics, very often jokes about our golfer-in-chief. Obviously, he's still pretty sharp witted.  H^^ Steve

I also get emails from Hawk ("Devore Hawkins").  Not sure why, since I never met the man....but it's pretty obvious that he's no fan of the Golfer-in-Chief - which makes him okay in my book.

I met then Captain Hoyt Hawkins at Tachikwa AFB, Japan in 1967 at the far east meet that the USAF used to have. Meet directors at that time were Zel Ritchie and Bob Dunham(Orbit radio corp.)
To say that he was a force to remember is an understatement. As an enlisted man I didn't spend too much time with him but it was a treat to watch the man Fly. Always a professional and he knew his equipment and how to make it work. I had hoped to be on an USAF team with him on it  alas not so. I made the 68 team as a mechanic and He wasn't there or at the trials at Arnold research station in Alabama. I went to the nats and returned to my station at Langley and mustered out of the service 9 days later. A great way to end my military service. I did exchange a few emails with him a few years ago and was really glad to hear from him.
He was an inspiration to all of us who knew him or had the chance to see him fly in the circle. Do hope for the best for him and hope that his health improves.

This just in from Hawk/Hoyt. He's still got an excellent sense of humor!   LL~ Steve

PS: At first glance, I thought it said "Brett" not "Burt".

How can any one miss Big Art.  Had quite a visit with him and Dennis at Brodaks.   He looks in better shape than I am.
