The final day....PAMPA Stunt Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert.
I flew Intermediate and this was my first contest. My head is full of new knowledge and now to process it all. Learned so much and am inspired.
Feeling good about it all and looking forward to more competition. Got to meet so many terrific stunt flyers and all of them were friendly, helpful and interesting people.

Day one of competition down here at the Carolina Criterium Control Line Contest in Huntersville, NC sponsored by the Metrolina Control Line Society. Thankee to all the Carolina Gang for putting on such a mighty fine contest. Judging by attendance and all the fliers that came from out of State they have truly figured out how to draw the fliers in.
Personally I tip my hat and take a bow to several down there who have given me time and tips and all kind of help.....Will, Wayne, Gene, Dan, Rusty, Mike, Jim, Dave, Bob, Gerry, Sara and David in particular. Everything from parts loaned to critiques to coaching to general great attitudes.
This will not be my last time down to this contest.
C'mon down and fly...they will love to have you come and grab a handle.....
Whooooooo Buddy)))))

Practice day down here in Huntersville, NC at the Carolina Criterium Control Line Contest.
What a great bunch of folks from all over.... South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Virginia, Georgia, Florida,  Alabama, Kentucky,  Tennessee, Canada, Michigan and me from Minnesota. Pretty dang cool say I. My first time flying away from my own field. Met many a folk I felt that I already knew.....so many gave me advice and tips and made me feel truly welcome.
Looking forward to the competitive events starting in the AM. Thank you to all my home club members, The Minneapolis Piston Poppers, for there efforts to get me ready and show support. I owe them all a big thanks.
Whooooooo Buddy))))

Shug, by the time you read this you will have learned a lot more than you thought you knew.   Trying to remember all the names and faces.   I know quite a few of the gentlemen from past NATS, VSC and a few local meets.   Wtch out for Jim Lee and tell him old DOC says hi.   Dave T. and I were out moving the new circle to where it will not be a lake.  Remember to have fun. So true....my brain is swollen and full. What a fantasic day. I did better than I thought I would in Profile and learned a ton. Gene Martene took me to the circle and worked with me after the competition. Watched my flights and critiqued me and encouraged me. Mighty fine.
Got to meet Jim Lee and watch him fly that Gee Bee. That plane is a sight to behold and cuts up the sky.
Having a very fun time. Very fun.

Looks like a great one going on down there Shug, glad the weather is cooperating too. Thanks a ton for showing us Dan's ultra cool twin Fox Bearcat, that's a MAN's model airplane! ;D This is the first time I've ever seen video of it, and being able to hear it was awesome too. Now on the other hand, a pink Spitfire? Really???

Shug is Great for the event! Lots of personality!

Great gesture on Dan's behalf for loaning that beautiful p-51 to Matt! Also, helping Shug with his tank.

Curious to know what happened to Matt's Vector! I had something similar happen.

This event is on my bucket list for sure!!

I did not see the crash but Matt told me that the wing on his plane which is an ARF just exploded on the down side of the reverse wingover. That is all I recall.
Yes that Dan Banjock is a real fine feller and and he could fly a shoe on a string and win an event. He for sure lives up to his reputation as a fun and good guy. Helped me out.
Make sure you do get to this event. Set the bar for my first contest.

The wing folded as I turned inverted on the reverse wing over. The plane flew straight up, went back over my head, did a loop and hit the ground. People said it was one of the more spectacular crashes they've seen in a while. I just stood there dumbfounded when it finally hit the ground.

Dan Banjock saw what happened and offered me to fly his P-51 in the second round, which I accepted.  That Mustang is one seriously awesome flying airplane! It goes right where you point it flew the same speed everywhere in the pattern. I came just two points from 3rd place in expert after not flying the airplane once before that. I can't thank Dan enough for letting me fly the plane in the contest.

After the contest was over, my grandfather gave me his P-47 so I can fly something while I work on my Staris getting it ready to fly. Again, I can't thank him enough for giving me the airplane to fly at school!

Huntersville was a great contest, despite flying in challenging conditions most of the time due to the turbulence. Can't wait to make the trip again!

Shawn, you were stretched thin to say the least. It's hard enough for a person just be there as one of the crowd, wanting to focus and execute at the highest level for which you are capable, and knowing you only get two shots in each event to do your stuff. That stuff for which you've spent months of laughs, cringes and bandaids preparing. But you were not only compiling a marvelous documentary, but at the same time, engaging everyone you crossed paths with, exchanging lively conversation with new friends and drinking in the atmosphere, leaving no one feeling slighted by the attention you paid.

And then you still managed to execute a performance to be proud of in Profile on Saturday, out scoring some old hands at the game, and locking down a solid first place in the big event on Sunday with a gimpy engine and only one official flight. I know your Piston Poppers are proud of you! Well done. I'm glad that we were both competing in the same events so we had some down time to talk planes and sun and wind. Nothing but a genuine good guy behind that big ol' grin, it was great meeting you.

So here's a thought for anyone who ever gives this laid back sport of fun a try. No matter what the score is, when the wheels touch the ground, for the rest of your life, you can always say, "I flew competitive control line precision aerobatics." And nobody can ever take that away. That's a win... it's also a mouthful. Lol

Here are Shawn's and my Profile flights from Saturday. I think Profile is the most fun event of the whole weekend, because there are so many pilots and planes and a loose atmosphere. I think most of us treat it as practice for the PAMPA stunt events coming up the next day.

So, here's Shawn. Sorry I was late getting the camera going, I forgot to start it before we had to launch. But he flew a really sharp flight.

And here's here's mine.

Since beginner and intermediate were combined and we all flew together, I suppose this isn't jacking Shug's thread.
Here's my buddy Roger Altizer bringing home the gold in beginner with his Oriental. He also competed in OTS on Saturday. He almost nipped me in beginner back in the May contest.

Doc,

I am posting this picture  for you, it is David Smith flying Watt Moore's electric fanfare,  he got one Test flight on Saturday , then placed  just out of third place in advanced stunt on Sunday.  David does not compete  Normally in stunt, he flys  mostly carrier,  with a little coaching and serious stunt practice  , he could compete in  expert  and do well, but that will not happen any time soon .

I am out on a backpacking trip in the mountains of North Carolina. Got a little reception here on the mountaintop and I'm typing this from laying in my hammock. Thank you Rusty for posting the videos and all the nice comments every body. As soon as I get to a real computer I will post more. I am still dwelling on the contest and thinking about control line flying while walking on the trail it's a wonder I haven't fallen off the mountain. Shug      Linville Gorge is very difficult to get out of if you get off the trail. Many people hurt and lost there every year. There is no road through it,you must walk it. On a overcast day I got totally turned around even with my compass. It took me two hours to get back on the trail. ~^

Control Line sure has some good and interesting folks involved in it.
Felt real good to compete.
Thanks again Rusty for filming my flights. It was a pleasure to fly with you and Dennis. Now...to go check my glow plug.
Shug
I bet it feels good to just sit a while now. And you're quite welcome. I was happy we got to compete in the same events and get to know each other. Those documentaries you made are fantastic. Glad you made it back to Minnesota safe and sound. We got a little snow flurry in SC this morning, so I guess the gloomy season has begun. Hope to see all of you again next time.

Shug, glad you had a great time and made it home okay.   Right now I can't watch any videos that come up with HD marker on them.  Keep getting errors.   Did get to watch a video of Sparky sanding his plane as it did not come up with the HD what cha may call it.

Getting some sitting tonight........tired from spooking trick or treaters last night))))

Looking forward to building season now.

Home and content for sure. Editing backpacking videos. Sorry you can't watch the Criterium videos......I had a blast filming everyone flying and such.
Maybe try going to the little gear wheel (settings) on the bottom right of the video on You Tube and reducing the resolution...may work for ya'.
Thanks.

Doc, let me expand on that. My system works fine, but I still adjust the video stream to smooth it.

try this:
1. Click the Youtube logo to receive the feed directly from the Youtube site.
2. The instant the video starts, click the Pause button. (If there is a commercial, wait til it finishes to continue)
3. Click the Gear icon as Shug suggested. Select 480p
4. Click the play button and it will very likely stream much better.

Hope this helps.
