Repairing my Legacy...
« on: September 30, 2014, 06:46:22 AM »
Fuel ran out coming out of the clover and it hit the ground nose first...
Fuselage and tail undamaged, wing in three pieces... After a careful inspection, i thought it 'd be worthwhile repairing this ship....
A few pics of the first efforts...

Sorry to hear of your mishap.   Looks like it will fly again.   May not be as pretty or light, but then again we never know.   Good luck on the rebuild.   Also don't forget to check for other damage that you may have missed.

If you can keep from gaining weight, on the plane not you, it will probably fly better.   LL~ LL~

Wing covering is on.
Now, gotta get the most oil I can off that nose, and as soon as it is good enough, finish this repair.
Hope to fly it next weekend.

Then...
It was hard to get the oil off that nose...
But I thought it was goos enough and finished the ship.
I had never done monokote before, so the really bad result I thought was my bad...
Last Sunday finally took the ship to the field... First flight very good, no sign of problems with the structure.
Second flight and the covering came off of the top left wing.
I was able to land the ship and we checked it out.
That was when a friend asked if I had removed the plastic film from the back of the covering before ironing it down... To which I replied: "What film?"... We laughed very hard and I came back home and LL~ remover all of the new covering and have redone it, the right way now...
One question though... How did it stick with the film yet there??? NowLL~
Now,.have a good laugh and remember, the first time is always the first time...

Like all of us in the past, you must have pitched the instructions that came with the covering> LL~ LL~  Maybe I'm paranoid, but I read the instructions on every thing 90% of the time.   Even with all the Brodak kits I've built I still read the instructions.   Each type of covering material has its idiosyncrosies.   And yes I did try to cover a surface before removing the backing one time.

Actually, and this is not na attempt to excuse myself, I started doing iron on covering with SLC, and that does not have the film, so.... HB~> HB~> HB~>
But, you know that I've spoken to a number of people about it and it seems everybody has done it.... LL~ LL~
I guess this is like learning to fly inverted, you will crash a ship or two... LOL
Oh, I've almost finished the new covering and without the film it Works better.... LL~ LL~

Hi Marcus, First let me say that I really enjoy your columns in Control Line World! Now as to getting the oil out of the wood try K2R spray spot remover and if not available mix up talcum powder and regular alcohol about the consistency of milk. Paint it on and let it dry then brush off. Several applications may be needed. But it will work out in time!

Thanks Phil!!!

I did the talcum/alcohol thing and it worked pretty well... I had to domit a few times indeed...
I've finished the new covering and just some details and it will be ready to fly again...
This time the covering is way better.... LL~ LL~

Looking good.   Just think if all the covering had come loose while flying. %^@

Looks a lot better than mine.

Don't tell Marcello, but I have the wing framed up and the flaps hinged as well as the stab/elevator on the Chupim.   Type in the name on the internet and it show it is a black bird.
