I can hardly wait until Monday when I get my sound pack and scale spinner. The sound pack has the correct engine sound and a clear prop on start for added realism.I am also thinking of adding smoke and some other things. This is only sport scale but I intend to make it a real as possible. The only thing lacking is the cockpit area. There is no way to add a full cockpit in this model as the bell crank is in the way. If I decide I like this event I will build a all up scale plane with a full cockpit for the next airplane.

What sound generator are you using?  How big is the speaker?  Is it driven by the same signal as the speed controller?

Just giving an opinion here.  The original chartreuse and red is classic and hard to do any better.  There have been a number of other color schemes on the Shoestring and its derivatives.  One of the better ones is the so called Yellow Jacket.

The rules require that you have a pilot when you fly.  On a plane this size the pilot head hides the rest of the interior.

  Hey Keith;
Thanks for the cover shot, I'm going to dig that one up to make a color copy of for contest trophies for the weekend. Several of the classic Goodyear/Formula One class airplanes. Shoestring, Bonzo, Rivets, The original Cassutt, the black and white one I think is the Deerfly? Not sure what the far airplane is. Great shot!

I'll ad another vote for that one, it's good looking and it's also the scheme that undoubtedly speaks "Shoestring".

I had no intentioned to hijack Roberts thread on his really neat Shoestring, but thought it would be OK to mention this Yellow Jacket thing.

The chartreuse is definitely THE Shoestring, but this Yellow Jacket would be something else.  I finally got the photos downsized to get them posted.  There is about that version in the November 1971 Air Progress.  The Yellow Jacket was built from plans.

Just a detail note here Sparky, maybe you haven't finished shaping yours yet but it looks like the full scale turtledeck/headrest has an essentially straight profile line from the glass down to the fuse, not curved.

Got my scale spinner today all I have to do is paint it and drill Zuse fasteners around the base. I have decided to mold scale exhaust pipes instead of aluminum tubes.

What is the scale factor?  1/8?  1/6?  1/12?

Williams only makes (made) the common scales.

Robert,

Your hard efforts and precision modeling, and especially that Shoestring model, has inspired me!

I now have a semi-scale model on the drawing board, not for the Nats, but for next year.

Keep up the good work and great videos.

The white one is N26C, the original in it's last iteration before donation to the San Diego aerospace Museum by Ray Cote.
Green one is the original wing to N26C and a built up airframe using another Shoestring fuse and tail by Planes of Fame Museum. It's painted in a color close to it's apple green that it was repainted in the early 60's before Ray Cote purchased it and painted it in it's famous light blue/tangerine Gulf colors.

I saw a thing about modern Goodyear racers on TV.  They actually did taxi out to the runway, unlike old B&W films from the past.

YES!  Photo #1 above, is the real original Shoestring: chartreuse & red, as duplicated in the 33" span Air Trails construction article so many years ago.

Shoestring later underwent several paint scheme changes - including the nauseating "puke green", the blue & orange, and others - but the original chartreuse (Cadillac color?) with red trim is the REAL Shoestring.

1949 Cadillac chartreuse green is the color, Chinese red is the trim. The puke green is actually apple green that Mike doesn't like! it was repainted in the mid-60's to that color.
I saw it in person the first time in the Gulf colors, at the Los Angeles Auto Show next to a Ford GT. Around 1966-67.
