DMAA Southwestern C/L Championships - Photos and Results
« on: August 31, 2014, 10:05:47 PM »
Great contest, great people, great weather!  The first day was Old Time, Classic and Profile - 15 flyers, many flying all 3 events, we weren't done until 6 in the evening.  We welcomed new member Crist Rigotti - he flew all electric, a Jamison Special in Old Time, and his own design in profile and Expert (actually a backup plane, pressed into service after losing his main airplane in a crash last month).  Sunday was great, as well, a little hotter but still better than usual (it has been a mild summer so far) and the forecasted winds held off until flying was finished about 1pm.

Congratulations to Rich Oliver - he had an amazing second flight today to win this contest and also give him enough points to win the 2014 District VIII trophy, awarded to the highest placing Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert flier of the past year.

I'm surprised that Joe didn't place any higher, having all those VGs.

Dave Ek pits Stephen Jeansonne's Cosmic Wind. He must have hit it too hard, as the crank sheared during the race.

That's my pal Dave Ek!  We flew together back in 1962 when he was a football lineman at an area (No. Ill.) high school.  Guaranteed: if Dave hit anything, it was going to break.   LL~

It was an honor to have judged Expert. With an abundance of top 5 and top 20 pilots, it was the best flying that I have seen in one place in years.

Past Nats Champ Doug Moon's first flight was one to remember.  The second round came and the war was on. Richard Oliver found a slight opening in the door and took it to first place. Steve Moon, John Hill, and Joe Gilbert also put on an exhibition on how the pattern should be flown.

The quality of the airplanes just gets better and better, and yes, we still believe in appearance points.

The number of entries for the contest was unbelievable. When the sun came out about 1:00PM the temperature went up and some passed on the second flights to avoid the heat yet the flying still went past 6:00 PM.

It is a shame that AMA no longer knows what real competition and even better friendships are!

I will have more pictures tomorrow.

There's a correction in Doug Moon's scores in Expert on Sunday. His Appearance Points were inadvertently omitted so his scores are eighteen points more than those shown on the scoreboard photo. His high of 609 moves him ahead of Richard Oliver's high of 606, therefore Dougie is 1st and RO is 2nd.

Also, this changes the point totals for the District VIII Perpetual Trophy to a tie between RO and Andy Stokey. Rather than splitting the coveted eagle down the middle, as some have suggested, or "thumb wrestling", or even tossing objects into trash cans at farther and farther distances as is the practice at the Ringmaster Roundup, each flyer will have custody of the trophy for half a year, to admire, dust, and cherish in his own home. Congratulations  Richard and Andy!

The Dallas Model Aircraft Association has kept this contest going for at least twenty years that I've been a member, and we have trophies dating back to 1953, we have no difficulty meeting the AMA "Traditional" definition for a contest.  Our contestants and visitors work alongside us as hard as we do, setting up canopies, banners, providing food, judging, tabulating, running scores, counting laps, timing and scoring racing, and then, when it is over, they help tear it all down and store it for next time. Come to think of it, darn near all our visitors are DMAA members, the sun rarely sets over the DMAA organization, to paraphrase a phrase...

Heartfelt, huge, "Thank youse" to all,
dale g

Took the words right out of my mouth, that Texan is a great looking airplane. I really like the Shark done in the Navy scheme too, very nicely done. y1
