Nats Stunt Entries
« on: August 24, 2014, 01:22:35 PM »
I'm looking for the numbers of people who flew stunt at the Nats over the past fifteen years or so, particularly in Advanced.  AMA has data, but it's flaky.  I think a good metric is the number of people who showed up intending to fly, hence got assigned flight numbers for qualification flights.  Probably the best source would be scoreboard pictures. I have numbers for 2005, 2008, and 2010 through 2013.  Curiously, I don't know how many flew Advanced this year.  AMA says 8, but that's not right.  Please post or send me scoreboard pictures or official data.  Thanks.

Thanks.  You got pictures of the qualifications posters?  I'm interested in how many total entries there were that showed up.  The AMA said that 16 entered and 8 flew in 2014.  Usually there are some no-shows among entries, but my guess is that all those 16 flew or at least showed up to draw ping pong balls.

I looked through the file but didn't get any from the qualifications.  I know quite a few took pictures from the overhead in the pilots meeting.  Maybe somebody still has a shot of it.  Anybody have that computer file?

Agreed. Looking at all the scores, they show the registered entrants but it looks as if they only got the scores from the last round flown. If you didn't qualify, it looks like you got a 0, or didn't fly. I would use the registration numbers. You could also check NATS News.

The AMA recorded scores look screwy throughout, and in many years they didn't even list the finishing order in Stunt. I know it was submitted, so I have no idea why it was not reported.

Howard,  I have pics of the qualificaton boards but can only clearly see Advanced.  Cut the bottom off of the Expert boards.  16 flyers is what I count in Advanced.

Howard.
Group A had 8 Advanced, and Group B had 8. I think 1 flyer withdrew and did not fly.
Group C had 5 Expert, and Group D had 6 Expert.

Thanks.  Wes dropped out of Expert before the draw, so I'll use ten as the total.

It was actually a little weird.  Steve Yampolski's circle assignment method, which we used in the workaround to include Expert and do the seeding, puts a 10-entrant event on one circle.  Bob McDonald didn't want to do that, so he left Wes in as an excuse to spread Expert over two circles.  It all worked out and nobody complained.

Look at the consequences of splitting Advanced into two events, figuring that nobody had actually collected data.  Here's what I got:

Anyone got numbers from the years before 2003? I cant remember how many people flew when I was flying Advanced in the early 90's but it seemed like a lot.
