Its done (PICS)
« on: August 20, 2014, 06:11:08 PM »
I started this after coming back from Brodak's Approximately 60 days ago and it's finished.61 ounces and  I would guess it's a solid 18 to 19 point airplane . Its finished in Randolph dope and has a ST .60. 6.5 ounce tank and a 13x6 Revup prop. It will get a few more sessions rubbing if it flies good this weekend.

60 days is 600 hours work

This might be the best dope finish I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot.  Never seen dope flow out so evenly with such depth.  Did you do a movie on the final clear coats?  Think a lot of people would like to know your whole system.
Congratulations Sparky…glad I’m out of the finishing game!

I hope your watching Tom

Coming from you Phil that's a huge compliment. Thank you!

No movie on clear coating. But I will say this when I took it to Kentucky to show I was 2 coats away from finish. I sanded the whole plane flat with 1000 and shot a flow coat sanded that with 2000 until all flat. Then I shot one more coat of clear thinned with retarder in it (lots) I would say 35% and thinned it again with Randolph. I am working on polishing now. Sanding with 5000 and using 3M Ultimate rubbing compound and will finish rubbing with 3M Finesse-it.

This is a 6.5 ounce finish. Most of the paint is on the bench as dust.

Robert,

That is a beautiful plane. Your pictures do not give justice to the colors or the subtle contrast. How much did the last two coats of clear add weight wise?

About a 1/2 ounce and after all the sanding I had a weight loss along with changing the muffler it lost 2 ounces from when you saw it in Kentucky.

Should be pretty awesome, light and lots of power. Is the ST new or do you still need to break it in a bit?

Its all rubbed out for the first time. In a few weeks I will do it again and then wax it. Here is the last of the pics on this build and I will start my next video tutorial tonight or tomorrow. I can still build with the best of them.

I love the looks of that plane.  It looks like it is ready to attack any thing in its road.   The paint scheme really enhances it also

Thanks for all the kind words. There really is no shortcuts what is represented in these picture is over 500 hours of work no mater if you do it in a year or 50 days its all the same amount of labor. So lets figure out its true worth.

ST.60 $150
RS Spinner $35.00
canopy $5.00
Bellcrank horns and pushrod.$50.00
wheels$15.00
dope and covering $60.00 on the low side.
thinner $50.00
wood$150.00
prop$5.00
pilot $5.00
sandpaper 40.00
glass,resin and CF. $40.00
I am sure that I am missing a bunch so lets say around $455.00 materials and 500 hours at only 10 dollars a hour (should be $25.00)
$5500.00 never get that for it but in the real world that's what it would cost

I just think the Mirado is snappy and snazzy. Those reds move me. I kinda want to hug it.
Sparky...would love to see a video on your buffing techniques sometime if you have not made one already. Still watching the Mirado build so if you covered it never mind.
I am on the canopy one currently.
You did a fantastic job on that plane. Look forward to seeing it on the lines.
