There is a slight wind drift but Howard and others at times have back pedaled a bit to avoid their own turbulence.

A Big Congratulations to David.
Very few people know how hard winning one of these things can be.
Take a look at some of the names that missed the finals and then remember that Orestes and Kenny didn't enter.
Yah, it's pretty hard.

Congratulations to David Fitzgerald for the win and to all the finalist for exciting competition.

Congratulations to Dave F. for flying into first place and thank you to Dave T. for the reporting.  Another late night in Korea but it was good to read the play by plays.  Also should say congratulations to all who made their respective top cuts and most certainly to the Open top five.  You all have shown a lot of dedication to what we do.  One final word of thanks to Bob McDonald and his team of volunteers for running the show this year.  Would have been hard to do without their efforts.

Hi Doug.  Just got home to KC and glossed this over quickly and found your question.  I can answer only for me and my .76 although it was probably about the same for all.  During early morning practice and really early round flights I needed to open the needle up nearly half a turn to get the same launch rpm I got for evening practice the night before.  As the day wore on the needle went in to the target rpm.  Strangely fuel consumption wasn't changed much.  That wasn't always true though as various fronts went through the needle might go anywhere.  Just had to really rely on the tach and believe IT and not your ears.  I made no prop changes.  I also ran 15% nitro all week. Many cut back to as low as 7.

Mike thank you and every single person for being so kind.  Makes it worthwhile to do it.  For those who have never been to or competed in competition at this level I hope it gives a glimpse into how it works but also the effort required to do this well.  Stunt IS hard!  But it's also so satisfying to achieve and grow and do well.  The lifelong friends  made are priceless.  Typical printed media can never really show the  'people' part nor how the equipment is really used.  This form of reporting I believe is a step closer to hands on.  And for those who simply can't come they might feel they did attend if only in a cyber world.  I think that's better than waiting two months for the magazine to hit your mailbox to find out who the winners were.   (Hint: to be at this level and do what they do they are ALL winners!)

Sitting here at work wishing I was back in Muncie for some more flying.

The week of the nats was great.  We had great weather, great access to circles, and great support from the nats Administration.
We had fun times spent on the grass flyover areas throwing gliders and flying RC Helicopters and launching cool rockets!  Some of the best times at the nats are the evening goof around sessions after practice.  It’s fun doing that stuff and getting to know people in a different setting.

The competition, it was fierce this year as it always is every year. Three of the top 20 qualifiers from my circle ended up in the top 5 flyoff on Saturday.  Myself, Paul, and Brett were together for initial cut to 20 then we went on with David and Howard to round out the final 5.  I have always said I wanted to go to the Northwest Regionals, well, they brought it to Muncie. Complete with rainy/foggy/cool weather as well.  It was a hard fought contest and in the end David stood at the top.  I did my best with my new plane that only had 5 patterns on it when we left Dallas but it wasn’t enough to overcome David’s precision and consistency.  Congratulations goes out to David for another Nats championship.

Next year it will be a different story.  :)

That's where he always excels. I can beat him on individual flights when I am at my very best, which is how I manage to be competitive with him in local contests, or something like Top 20 day.  But in these things he just grinds you down.

NWR (Memorial Day, presuming they get a site for next year) or Golden State (October) would be great places to come to one of our contests. That would be awesome.

      Brett
