New United (first flights)
« on: July 08, 2014, 01:22:34 PM »
Just finished up my new United for classic. Final weight came out to 51 ounces, which I'm fairly happy with. Balance came out just about perfect on it too! Power is a PA 40UL on a header muffler made by Randy Powell.

I'm shooting for the first flights this Saturday

Really nice Matt. Each one looks as if it nicer than the last. You are brave to do a gold color scheme, I know it is not the easiest color to work with. Looking forward to hearing the flight report.  8)

Yep, nice work. Interesting color scheme. Should really stand out. Now, go out and beat up on people with it.

Thanks for the comments so far guys! Here's a couple quick words on the color scheme:

The color scheme is almost a direct copy from one of my grandfather's airplanes from the 90s. The gold was mixed to get the shade I wanted. For an entire can of Brodak gold, I mixed about 1/2oz of Diana Cream into it and that changed the color of the gold just enough to get what I was looking for. The maroon was Miss Ashley Red mixed with insignia blue until I got the color I wanted. I can't remember the ratio I used though.

It may look deceiving but this paint scheme was the most difficult scheme to mask out I've done so far. If I were to do the plane over again, I would stick with the same color scheme but change the steps I took to get the painting done.

Thanks Wayne!!

I've had more issues with my electric RC airplanes than I've had with gas/glow airplanes in both RC and CL, which makes me not want to change over to electric anytime soon. I'm also very happy with the way the rear exhaust motors perform and don't see a need to switch to electric.

Matt,

Outstanding!

Picture perfect finish and detail!

Amazing the canopy finishing detail around the perimiter!  H^^

Especially when not to much sticks to canopy material.

Any secrets you can give up?

Super great job!

It was a beautiful stunt heaven day today so we decided to fly the United fort he first time. Unfortunately, we came up a little short. As I was setting the needle, I noticed it began varying widely between 9100 and 10000RPM. I shut the motor off thinking there is an air leak somewhere.

I'll take it apart and change the fuel line, and check the tank again before I go out and try to fly it again.

Matt,

That is a very nice plane. I like the way you detailed the cockpit.
It seems like the canopy is brought back compared to the pictures of the brodak version. I prefer the way you installed the canopy. Completely changes the look of the plane.
Makes me want to build one. If I only had a little time....

Cyclone 11-4.5, and Powermaster 10-22GMA.

As I was ground running it yesterday it began surging as well as it was running, but I thought it was because I was running low on fuel and the motor was just leaning it out...turned out to not be the case.

Its kinda hard to determine without being there but I suspect that your original assumption is correct. Maybe a leak in the fuel system somewhere. Brodak tank?

My first thought was that the engine might be over or under propped but I think what you have should work fine. I have found, however, that Powermaster 10% is like Sig Champion 5%.

I'm fairly confident it's a leak somewhere in the system. I got a Brodak tank in there currently.

Powermaster 10-22GMA.

What color is it?  When did you buy it?

If it's purple, make sure to clean your airplane thoroughly as soon as you're done flying for the day, and consider adding some purple or fuchsia accents to your paint scheme.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Thread drift: Bought some 10/22 the other day. New batch at the LHS. Was clear, not purple so it seems they have gotten the message. Also, the purple GMA 10/22 I had been using did not stain the clear dope over white but it sure discolored the Rustoleum painted landing after only one flying session. Just my experience, other's may differ. OK, back to you Matt. 8)

I'm really glad to hear that, because I just ordered a case of the stuff.  It's nice to know that they listen to people.

Mark Scarborough reports that his Avenger has suffered some mild staining -- I'm pretty sure that he used some sort of catalyzed automotive clear on that, and that's a paint job to really care about.

Finally got around to taking the front end apart on United and found the tank sprung a leak when it was running. We sealed it, air tested it again and put it back together. Might put a flight in tomorrow on it.

The muffler sounds really cool!!! It reminds me of an ST 46 only louder and in RE form. It definitely did seem to act a lot like a pipe since it was more or less the same speed everywhere in the pattern.

The only thing is I'm using very little fuel (maybe it's because I'm used to the fuel consumption of the pipe). On 4 1/2 ounces I'm running almost 10 minutes.
