Fuel Can Musical Instruments!
« on: December 02, 2013, 08:58:55 AM »
My long time friend John LoRe and his wife Nita, have moved to Hot Springs AR. JOhn and his brother got me started in CL when we were in grade school.

They sent me this video. NOt the best sound, but certainly original with the right "roots".This is how

 Here is John's introduction:

Here is a video of the Samantha Fish Blues Band.
Her electric guitar is made using a K&B fuel gallon can!
His electric bass is made using a Fox fuel gallon can!

I could not believe my eyes when I saw it, and I thought you would get a kick out of it too!

Here it is:

Shouldn't this be in the Debate section so we can argue about which fuel can sounds the best??

I'm reviving this because of what I heard this evening on the way home from the flying field.  It was Samantha Fish again.  She lives in Kansas City, about 40 miles east of Jim Lee.  Listen to this: .

Ty said it.  And, she can play the guitar. Much better than the rock distortion and ear piercing junk that unfortunately seems to be the norm. The rockers make millions while good musicians work for pennies.

I've seen a guitar made from a toilet seat aka, "The Comodiola" and one from a 195? Chevy hub cap, but there is something truly original about the glow fuel 'git fiddle!  Samantha has a great blues voice...bet we haven't heard the last from her!

She's playing a Fender StratoCanSter! Nothing so good as three-bar Blues, Puccini notwithstanding.

Thanks for bumping the thread, Howard.
When it first appeared here, I looked up Samantha Fish, watched some videos and listened to a good interview with her. I now have her in my Pandora shuffle mix and a screen shot of her and the band in my Windows desktop background slideshow. I love the Blues.

I pleased that nobody has stooped so low as to make a "nice cans" joke or remark, because that would be both vulgar and demeaning. I truly hope nobody goes there... >:D

"Rock distortion" and "ear piercing junk", can you define that old man?
And, can you please tell me what part of the sound on the original video is "not the greatest"?

Very cool, and great music too! It would be really interesting to hear the story behind how they ended up with those fuel can gee-tars. y1

Here many, many years ago I was going through my stored (at the time) C/L stuff to find that somehow, I still had a bit of fuel left in a gallon can of Fox Missile Mist. I ended up using the fuel and saving the can. Kept the can for years and years. (I think Fox Mfg. quit using cans in the late 70s?) It was in excellent condition. Well, many, many moons ago I ended up storing it up in the attic along with some other "stuff" that wasn't being used.

Fast forward a decade or two.

Shortly after re-activating my C/L hobby a couple years or so ago, I was up in the attic. While poking around I found the Missile Mist gallon can.  Much to my dismay, it has imploded from the attic temperature extremes and is a total loss. Really sucks because I am a C/L nostalgic at heart, and seeing/having old things from my C/L youth years gives me warm fuzzies.  I don't get warm fuzzies at seeing the old Missile Mist can now, instead I get PO'd at myself for not realizing what would happen to it up in the attic.

As for the fuel can guitars: Very neat.  I do wonder what their connection to glow powered model airplanes would be??

Searching to find my new place in this hobby!

I freely admit that this is a very good classic Blues Sound and I like it.

I listened to some of her other stuff on Utube and she really is an excellent musician witha great blues voice.  I agree with the comment above that she will make her mark in the Blues Circles.

I probably should explain my earlier remarks.  I've studied opera most of my life and actually sang professionally (small time stuff) as an operatic tenor hence the love for Puccini, but really like most styles of music especially Country, Bluegrass, and Blues!
I'm especially into Jazz Guitar as styled by Johnny Smith.

Which is why it's perfect for someone learning to play, sing and keep time at the same time. And perfect for jamming.  y1

My son,  JJ alias John Jared,  knows Samantha.  Says she opened for his group, "Villians Dance" a couple of years ago.   He is the lead singer for the group.   His Mother and I went and watched them perform one night at Harrahs in KCMo.   His Mother was not too enthused.  But, it is what he likes to do and is keeping him from being my pilot.  Me I like most kinds of music.
