Here's a couple more for you, Mike. I don't really have the skill or patience to do a finely-detailed cockpit, so it's fairly simple. The reflector sight is just a bit of piano wire with a scrap of SLC ironed onto it.

Covering and doping is all done now, so with any luck I'll get some primer onto it tomorrow before I go to work.

Looks great.   Makes me to want to clear the shop and start on mine.   But, I have committed to three Ringmaster builds and one refinish.

Here's the finished item. Well almost finished - it still needs the hinges sealed, and some eyelets on the leadouts might come in handy.

Engine: T&L ST.46
Prop: Eather 12x5.75, cut down to 11"
Tank: 6oz plastic clunk
Weight: 47oz
Paint: Tamiya acrylic, with KBS Diamond clear (and Bondall Monocel marine varnish*) over the top

Mike did a great job on this kit, and it was a really enjoyable build. I didn't have to change much. I made the cockpit cutout too wide for the supplied canopy, and ended up making my own; and the top of the fuselage ended up planked rather than the way the plans showed. Otherwise it's all standard as per the kit.

I'm about to go away for a few weeks, and the clear needs time to cure, so I'll fly it some time in the New Year.

* For KBS users: I really like the stuff and found I could airbrush it without having to thin it excessively.  Problem was that when I went to apply a second coat, it just beaded up like water on a freshly-waxed car.  When I RTFI I found that the second coat is supposed to go on within 6 hrs of the first  HB~>.  Hence the marine gloss to finish it off.

Looks great! No red stars on the top of the wing though? ???

No, oddly enough, the real thing almost never had them.

Hmm, I guess I've never noticed that about the Russian birds. Great looking model Steve, and worthy of a nice aluminum spinner!  S?P ;D

Thanks Wayne. If the consensus was that it'd be better with stars on the wings, I could easily put some on. Not changing spinners though - if you look closely, this one's got a cannon in it, which I'm rather proud of.  ;D

Here in Arizona, Leroy Black flies a beautiful Yak-9 from the kit.  Wish we had some photos, although he doesn't post here.

Heck, I'd say go for adding the stars then. That might be a problem though if all your other graphics are already under the clear?

I thought I could see something extra sticking out of the spinner, allen bolt or...? If so, that will work in an aluminum one too.

Steve what a magnificent job you have done on this.  This makes me very proud of the kit and of the wonderful job you did of building it and finishing it.  Thanks so much for the pictures and I hope this will inspire some of the folks that bought this kit to pull it out of the closet and build it.  The kit is still available by special order.

Thanks again

Mike

Thanks all for the very kind comments. Wayne and Joe, I've added the inauthentic stars.  I reckon you're right - it looks better with them, so I appreciate the feedback.

(The 'cannon' is just a bit of CF tube epoxied into a carefully-prepared spinner cone.)
