Saito 40 Bearing Replacement - new style ??
« on: May 29, 2013, 07:07:46 PM »
I recently noticed a lot of noise commig from my Saito 40 which I've
used every year since 2008.

Sure enough, it was rust in the rear bearing.

The replacement bearing from Horizon has shields, wheras the original
was an open race bearing with exposed cage.

Does anyone know what's up in this area ?

Hi Rex,

I just replaced one of my Saito .56 with ones from Boca bearing, and it's an open race bearing like the one you just pull out.  and the stock one was shielded.  maybe the ones you had was a Boca..  Did you buy the Saito .40 new?

Only bearings I have replaced was in a 72 I picked up really cheap in a trade that came complete with rusted bearings. The Saito bearings were back ordered so I ended up buying a set from Boca. After I had the engine together the bearings from Saito came in. Both rear bearings from Boca and Saito (Horizon) were open race and both front bearings were sealed.

Not sure what this really tells us on the original question. I would think the rear shouldn't be a sealed bearing but may just be a shielded bearing which might be OK.

Joe & Bob :

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

I know that OS stopped providing a crankcase breather and I usually
put a small dia capillary tube on the breather  fitting to improve the idle
if using a throttle.

Possibly the shield is to improve the idle by increasing the crankcase pressure
the or it's just an equivalent part number.

I presume it still leaks out a bit; otherwise the bearing will run dry.

Engine was bought new and bearing was never replaced before.

Blow-by is what lubes the cam gears and lifters. I would think it need to be an open type?
Is it a Saito part or Horizon replacement?

If you do a little bit every day it will get done, or you can do it tomorrow.

Well, those bearings turn out to be garbage!  I'll be replacing them with the Saito ones.
