Waxing planes

I was waxing my car today and when finish, I looked at my plane and decided to try it on the plane, wow! it was vary slippery, has any one notice if waxing helps the plane fly better or different? less drag !

I don't know about flying better. But they definitely look better. And, if you used dope, I believe they are a tad more fuel resistant.

Uncle Jimby got 20 points at the Nats.  I asked him what kind of wax he used.  He said that he didn't use wax, because he didn't want anybody dropping his plane.

On automotive clear coats, it really does make a difference to look at. Less of a difference on dope, I've noticed. You do need to be careful not to drop the model. They get real slick to the touch!

I am a Lemon Pledge guy myself. I use it on my planes and my Harley. I don't think it is quite as slick as paste wax.

Seems back in the day, some people thought a coat of wax would help the appearance of the plane.  Also they said it made clean up easier.

I saw a small can of that Aerogloss wax on that darn evilbay site a feww weeks back and was tempted to bid... but I resisted  , its the expensive stuff i sometiems have trouble resisting

Even on dope I use rubbing compound, then wax the finish and I think my planes fly smoother waxed than non-waxed. JMHO

Gorums (sp?) is part of the NY/NJ/PA (northeast?) tradition of dope finish. Followed with wax. This adds depth to the color and shine (a stated criteria, by the way, for awarding appearance points). Fuel resistance is also improved. Methanol is a powerful solvent. Rubbing compound followed by wax makes another layer, a renewable layer, to inhibit the dissolving of dope.
