Bp hobbies GM tissue

Has anyone tried this product yet? They also show Solarfilm lite, I remember someone asking about solarfilm.

My guess is that it is silkspan. "GM" is the usual designation for medium Sig Silkspan. If so it is a good product and works well if applied correctly and finished with good technique and patience. "SGM" is the heavier grade, "00" is the light stuff.

The product I'm refering to is heat shrinkable, applied with balsaloc, so it is not silkspan.

Dennis adamsin posted a reply in the for sale area about micafilm and Bp hobbies, I went to their website and saw the "GM' tissue. Very light, probably a good covering for sport models.

Go to the online catalog, look up coverings.  They list "FibaFilm" as the equivalent of Micafilm.  The "GM" is apparently similar but somewhat lighter.  It does not require any doping, but will accept paint.

They also show a "LW" tissue that they discourage from using on any gas model.

In any case these APPEAR to offer an iron-on alternative to traditional tissue/dope with ability to accept paint.  These MIGHT work well for those folks who like iron-on covering on their wings and rattle-can paint on the fuselage & trim?

I like using Micafilm on SAM & OTS models and lament that it is no longer available.  I have NOT tried any of the BP Hobbies products but they are on the to-be-ordered list.

I used it to recover a Ringmaster wing, a much abused, oil soaked veteran. Peeled the old covering off and sanded most of the residue.
Applied the GM covering by coating the LE / TE /center sheeting with Ambroid and let dry. Put a coat of Ambroid on the perimeter of the covering, lay it on and smooth / stretch it out like dry silksan.
Rub the glue into the 1st cot with your fingers to make ure it bonds wll.

Have whole wing ready, and shrink with a heat gun /iron at med heat, working side to side / top to bottom to prevent warps.

I sprayed Rust o leum on the fuse / til, and trimmed the wings  with it too.

I'm thinking that "GM" might be short for "Gas Model". Also thinking it may be worth a try...Hi Bill!

Hi I just recieved some from BP. I was expecting a type of tissue,but this is definitely a film type covering. It is a clear film with a  color laminated on one side. The instructions say you can put either side out. It looks cool (or at least different than 'kote) with the color side facing out. I am guessing it is similar to solite. Not to doubt anyone in this thread, but I dont think Ambroid would be a good choice, and since it is a plastic film, you would not be able to rub it into the first coat as stated earlier.
