My OS FS91 SII-P powered Jeannin Stahltaube flies
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:08:18 AM »
Tuesday evening I finally got to test fly my new CL Scale Taube.

I had never started a 4 stroke model engine before.

I down loaded the Owners Manual from the OS web site.  Read it cover to cover twice!

This was a used engine that I bought from Jack Sheeks last summer but he had not ran it either since he bought it used.  I went through the engine checking and resetting all of the adjustments to the Owners Manual settings.  Pushrods clearance was OK.  Idle Adjust and Needle to Factory setting.  Mounted engine in the Taube then waited 5 months for weather to allow a test flight.

Tuesday the weather looked good so off to our club flying site.  Put 6 ounces of fuel in the 10 ounce tank.  After a good test flight I drained 3 ounces of fuel back out of the tank.

I followed the Owners Manual instructions:
a.  Throttle wide open, glow driver NOT on engine.
b.  Spin motor with electric starter 5-6 seconds to prime engine.
c.  Turn prop backwards until against compression.
d.  Throttle to 1/4 open.
e.  Glow driver ON engine.
f.  Bump engine with electric starter.  It started on the first flip!!
g.  Allow engine a few seconds to warm up then slowly go to full throttle and adjust needle to just rich of full power.
h.  Go fly!!!

Piece of cake.  What was I worried about?
O yes, Keep away from the 15 inch meat cleaver!

4 strokes could never have reached the level of popularity in RC if they were especially difficult to use. What makes them so enduringly popular is the fact that, they are so very user friendly.

After I built the body of the Jeannin Stahltaube I found that the nose was 3 1/4 inches too long.  Chain Saw time.

Because I had to set the firewall / Engine mount back 3 1/4 inches the tank compartment is too short to mount the 10 Oz tank horizontal.  Since the engine has a fuel pump I mounted the tank vertical.  For the test flight I only put 6 Oz. of fuel in the tank.  It fed fine on the test flight.  After the test flight I drained 3 Oz. of fuel back out of the tank.  Any comments on things I should watch for would be appreciated.
