Flea Market Find

I bought a model at a local flea market that has been identified as a Johnny Casburn Miss Behave. I have no idea when this was made. Does anyone here know?

Casburn was in Fort Worth TX. Probably early 70's?

It is Classic legal, so it came out prior to the 70's.  I believe it came out in the 50's or so. I'll do more searching in my library.

There were at least 3 Miss Behaves kitted. Two were OTS legal, and looked like a Debolt  All American, but had a much smaller wing and no flaps. Casburn kitted another one in the late 1950's or early 60's. It was much more modern looking and had flaps.

The earliest ads I have found are in the defunct SIG Air-Modeler magazine. Aug-Sep 1966. The ad shows the following planes: WW1 combat SE-5A; Miss Behave @ 50" WS; Big Tex Trainer @36" WS; Little Outlaw @49"wing with carved and hollowed fuselage;The Sweeper,  multi-RC @58"WS.

The Miss  Behave appears, in the very small photo, to look like a small Nobler with a straight wing, rounded tips.

I built one in the late 60's. A simpler design than the Nobler but mine didn't fly as well. I think Tom Lay flew one at VSC ten or so years ago. Definitely classic legal and worth building.

As far as we could tell, Phil's was the last version kitted by Cashburn.  Mid '60s vintage

I guess if I can keep the thing from coming apart, I have a classic/N-30 model.

The SE=5A was a riot. Big built one with a McCoy 40 and we flew the hell out of it. It was a fun exercise to "finesse" a pattern out of it. It even survived a couple inverted "landings". The last was on the concrete circle at Rouge Park. Dad had to "re-curve the tops of the ribs on the top wing. I believe he still has it and it might even be ready to fly.........

There has been a long string of "Miss Behave" models coming out of Johnny Casburn's shop. Earliest were a "Miss" and a "Baby Miss" size, the baby designed around the sideport Ohlsson 23. These were small, thin flat bottomed airfoil model available in the hobby shops in 1945. Later iterations went as far as symmetrical wing and decent stunt ability. One needs to see a photo of the model to make an educated guess as to age.

My Miss Behave no longer exists. I was going to fly it in the upcoming Field of Dreams contest in St Augustine. I needed some practice, so I flew it today. The bellcrank platform pulled out on the bottom of a square 8. Total Loss. I need to come up with a "new" classic plane.

The "Baby Miss Behave:" surely dates from about 1948, because that's when I built one from the kit.  I would guess that the full size Miss Behave came earlier.

It's amazing how quickly and completely some of these things disappear. I had never heard of this thing before I found it at the flea market.
