Was reading an ad for 2008. I did not know that Satio made a 4 stroke CL engine.
Anyone have any history on this engine ?

I don't think they make the .40 any more, but they have had C/L versions of the .62 and the .72, I believe. Surf through the Horizon hobby distributor web site to see what is available now. I have a .62 C/L version in my stash. Bolts right in where the .56 fits. I have a .56 in the Score I flew at the Paducah contest, and hope to swap out the .62 into it for next year just to see how it goes.

The RC version of the Saito FA40 is still available and probably a better bet for the Bob Reeves mod which the 40A's need. I have the RC version. My absolute favorite engine.

If you pick up an RC engine and want the Saito CL part, it still avalible.
The complete assembly is : SAI040A831CL and will be offered until stock
is depleated. The blank body is also on the Horizon web site : SAI040A821CL
The only problem is that you hace to make a bunch of inlet inserts
to change the diameter, which is what the Reeves mod does with a
nylon screw.
You really can't change the RPM of a 4s much with the needle setting.

The Saito 40 is a great CL motor. But, mine were RC versions converted
to CL. I've never had much luck with Saito's carb inserts as they tend to
just barely vibrate and make it difficult to get a steady run while in flight.
I had a 40 on an Imitation; a killer combo. And, I have 2 Saito 40s on my
Hughes XF-11. What a sound they make when in sync!

I've got two Saito .40 R/C's on my PBY and another one on a Sig Mustang. I've got a fourth going on the Challenger 575 profile that I am currently finishing up. I run mine bone stock with the R/C throttle arm fixed wide open, simply adjusting the needle for tuning. I am extremely satisfied with all of them.
I've never run one, but I have heard of the out of the box C/L version that was sold not running as well.

True story, you can come to your own conclusions.
When Joe Gilbert decided to replace the TT36 with a Saito 40 on the now famous Yellow T-6, he bought a CL version of the Saito 40. Him and I played with that engine for a full season trying to get it to run consistently. We tried everything we could think of, he swapped out the metal tank for a plastic clunk tank, I threaded the intake for a choke screw and opened up the feed hole in the spray bar. We played with props, fuel and choke settings till we were both about discusted with the whole idea.
One day he had it out and it was doing it's normal you-never-knew-how-it-was-going-to-run thing.. I said "Joe that's it, were done fighting it.. pull that intake off and give it to me". I went to my shop, pulled the CL spray bar and barrel out of the carb body. Made a new barrel with a spigot needle and nylon screw like I have in all of my Saitos. Next time he came out we put the new intake on and adjusted it for the lap times the T-6 and Joe liked.
Since that day the T-6 has never been beat in Profile Expert including a First place at Brodak's.

But why would you want too? That's what the throttle is for, or in the case of Bob's mod - adjusting the nylon screw.
