Author Topic: Minado flight report (Read 4041 times)

Ted Winterman,Steve Smith and Dan McEntee met me out at Buder park today. Heat was 90 degrees and 1000% humidity. I set up my Easy-Up and we sat in the shade getting things ready. I ended up putting in four flights and we could take no more of the oppressive heat.

Good News Bad News as always. First flight I did the whole pattern less the RO. It was flying at a 5.0 lap speed. Seemed a lot slower to me and everyone said it looked slower but the watch don't lie. Last night I had taken out a 1/4 ounce of tip weight be it needed to be put back in. So a total of 1/2 ounce is in it. After the first flight on 63 foot .018 it seemed very nose heavy so I opened up the handle spacing and that helped on the second flight
. Third flight I switched lines to my Viper lines and handle which are .015 64 foot and lap times went to 5.1 seemed like six second lap times. There are no funny quirks with this model. Grooves and tracks super. I think I could use more turn so I will lighten up the nose a little. Or it could be to fly a little slower so the next time out I will try the Revup 13 x 5 pitch prop. This was all the good news now the bad news.

Because this is a new airplane the paint is not cured and even though I was careful fuel leaked out the venturi and onto the cowl so the repair is not a bad one but it is a PITA. I will fix the red and spray auto clear on the cowl to fuel proof it. I am Very pleased with this plane now its just fly it and get it trimmed out. Here is a picture of the cowl and it will be repaired today. I am sure more flying pictures will follow.

I forgot to say "boy do I love the sound of a good Super Tiger .60 run." Takes me back to my teen age years.

Glad I got to see it fly. It looked real nice out on the lines. Wings looked straight even in the loops and square corners. I was thinking on the way home that you have dome the two part clear stuff before, and that is what you need on the cowling. Maybe bake it it the sun in the window to hurry it along. It's been along time since I've done an elaborate airplane, but after that much success this early on in the flight test program, I wouldn't be able to sit still until the next flying session! Maybe a wider handle spacing yet, or if you have a prop you can cut down to 12.5 inches will help the feel on the turns. Baby steps! I'll just prescribe a gallon of fuel and ten or twelve more flights for it!
You guys should see it in person. Photos don't do the gold leaf lettering proper justice. A real modern but old school model airplane.

Robert,
What kind of paint was used on the cowl? Just curious. Was it Brodak dope?

I had an airplane that looked like that after it's first couple of flights with Brodak dope and Brodak clear.

Glad to hear it's a solid starting point, I had a feeling this was gonna be a good one. You now have next years NATS plane, time to start burning a bunch of fuel.

Very nice, Sparky. Brings back memories of when I first started going out with Shareen in high school. I was working at a local hobby shop...Paulsen Office and Hobby Supply...and was painting my first ever Ares in the back room (brushed on Aero Gloss). It was red mixed with gold to give a gold flake effect like that. Strangely enough, event brushed on, it came out looking pretty darn nice.

didn't have any gold flake letters like the Minado though!

A very beautiful airplane Sparky! The gold flake is a great touch!

If it flies as good as it looks it should be a truly great one!

Sounds like some Dupont two part clear is in order to protect the paint.

Yeah, the Randolf stuff is touted to be pretty fuel proof but definitely is NOT!

On mine when the raw fuel spilled on the cowl from the over flow tube it ran off and took the paint with it right down to the fiber glass cloth and resin on the cowl and nose. Very distressing on a new airplane!

Thanks Ted. I am wondering how many gold leaf letters I will see next year? It's fairly easy to do about a half hour per set.

I'm assuming the paint mask was still in place when you outlined the letters.

This masta' piece should just be hung up on a wall as a masterpiece work of art in an art museum.

I had the opportunity to watch Sparky fly this plane today. It is a wonderful flyer. Sparky wasn't totally happy with the trimming, but as an outsider looking in it appeared to be perfect.

The finish on this model is a sight to behold. It really needs to be seen in person to appreciate.

Thanks Ron it was great to see you at out field. As far as the Minado goes I would say 1 or 2 more times out and I should have it dialed in. Many at the field said it was fine as is,but not to me. I have removed all the tail weight I added and sped up the rear horn. That was the answer to the turn. I added some more tip weigh and that cured the tension issue. Now its all about dialing the handle in and getting use to it.
