Brian Gardner is back!!!!
« on: August 27, 2013, 06:31:11 PM »
Brian Gardner is back! For those who don't know Brian, he made these excellent plasma P&L sets for ST60, ST46, ST35 and OS35S. I got lucky enough to get a set for ST60 and ST46 when Brian offered them for sale last time.

Brian is back and is collecting orders for ST46, ST60 and OS35S. Head over to the link below and request your set before he sends the order in to the machine shop.

I got 3 sets for the OS 35S. They are ABC, not plasma. There are first class and eliminate the weak points in the engine.

Hmmm.  That's interesting.  I don't recall piston and liner problems with the little S but the bottom end of the con rod galling onto the crank pin "was" a big issue on a couple of mine.  I've heard a bushed ST con rod of one description or another was adaptable to solve that problem.  Anyone remember which rod it was?

While we're on these subjects.  Can anyone explain to me what exactly a plasma P & L set is????  I've got one of Tony's sets in a .46 from years back that I put together at Brian Eather's place using parts from other engines.  It is destined (hopefully in my lifetime) to power my new Chizler and I'd sure like to know what to tell people who ask me what "plasma" means.

By the way.  The seal on the P & L set is amazing.  When I first had the .46 put together I tried to get it to "stick" at top dead center and it was all but impossible to do so.  When I once finally did get it stuck there I put it on the shelf for a number of days wondering if it would hold compression.  When I finally did pick it up I just touched the side of the prop and it "popped" like I had flipped it.  Amazing!

    Hi Ted;
     I believe that the plasma is a sprayed on ceramic coating, either on the piston, or the liner bore, or maybe even both, but I think it is only on one part. They are supposed to wear forever. I have some Fox .35 piston and liner sets that I think Toni did that I got from someone else a while ago, but like you haven't had the chance to use them yet. I think even Fox had a .35 available at one time that was ceramic coated. I may be wrong, but maybe someone more versed on the subject will jump in.
   Type at you later,

The ST rod was from the G21 35. The weak point was the wrist pin bosses of the piston and the lower end of the rod.  I have 3 bad pistons now.

Plasma, or ceramic, coating is aluminium oxide with a form similar to sapphire which is much harder than chrome but not as hard as diamond. AFAIK it's an electroplating process and was first used, at least in mass production, by Norvel who have ties to the Russian aerospace industry who developed the process. From what I've been able to gather all ceramic liners are still made in Russia because their aerospace industry is willing to do small batches for outside companies. Fox may be having theirs done in America because of their ties with NASA or whoever they work with but I'm betting they're done in Russia too.

A long time ago I had an aluminium rod about 12" long which was part of the flap actuating mechanism from an F-111 and had a coating on it similar to the colour of a Norvel cylinder. It was impossibly hard to drive a cutting tool through it in my lathe so I'd take an educated guess it was likely an AAO coating but definitely NOT done by the Russians :).

G'day fellas. This is my first time to this forum. Up till now I only knew of the Stuka forum.

Yes I've been getting batches of ABC sets done again. OS 35 have been & gone, same for ST46. ST60 are up next with optional hemi heads. They include ABC piston/liner set, gudgeon pin with Teflon pads & rods.

I ran out of ST46 sets and have 9 people waiting for another batch which we will do after the ST60's.
