John Ashford

John Ashford died on Thursday, November 20, 2014 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I am told he passed away due to the effects of lung cancer.

In his early days, he was a fierce competitor in racing and combat. Later, he flew stunt.

John was well liked, designed controline model airplanes and built them for others.  

Godspeed, old friend...

Noticed this on another forum.  He was a gentleman and treated me like he had know me all his life.  First met him at his first VSC. :'(

John was a straight shooter the entire time I knew him. We reminisced about the old Combat and Rat Racing as well as Goodyear Scale Racing days. He was a fine sounding board of logic and fair play to me. In recent years he's been the one I've been meaning to call and get back in touch with; guess that will have to waite for awhile, I hope! Peace be with you old friend.

Truly sorry to learn of John's passing.
He was a good guy, always willing to help.
Outspoken and told it like it was!
He truly will be missed.

John was a good friend of mine.
We had some good flying sessions here in Oklahoma City and went to several contest together.  John was a great builder and flyer.  I learned a lot from John about building and flying control line planes.

I may have posted this somewhere else earlier, if so, it bears repeating. John and I drove over to the Tulsa airport to pickup Joe Bowman who was flying into town in the company C-310 to join us at the contest. We arrived a little early and there was a grand piano in the FBO's lobby, something many FBO's don't have. John ambled over to it, seated himself comfortably, then played the livin' fool out of that thing! He was good, really good. He told me he was glad his parents made him continue his practicing when he was young.

After Joe arrived, John sat down with him and they started playing a little together, scales, finger exercises....Joe is one heck of a pilot.....

John was one heck of a pianist.
