Looking for Power System suggestions for a Stiletto 660
« on: November 24, 2015, 04:44:36 PM »
I have attained a Tom Morris Stiletto kit, I believe it is the "660" size.

I'm wondering what most electric aficionado's would put in it for power.
I'm leaning towards a Cobra 35 series, just wondering if the 3515 is enough or if I may need the 3520?
Also, which Kv rating, 4S, 5S, or 6S, and what prop for a starting place?

Any specific mods to consider, like notching the wing LE to allow the battery to be further back for CG?
I'm not really in a hurry to build this yet, just collecting information.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

MM-

Are you flying that combo on a similarly sized plane, if so, what, and how many milliamps are you using for a flight pattern?

What IC would you say that is equivalent to? I believe the original Les M Stiletto 660 had a ST .46 in it.

Thanks,
Chris

I think the Tiger 46 is a little slack for that plane. I think my friend has a 51 in his. The electric info was from another thread where some top flyers chimed in about full sized stunters.

I don't think Les's Tiger 46's were "Slack".  You do need a "good Strong one for that airplane.

The last one I built had a ST 60 in it and it was very good at 58 oz.  I would aim for power in that range, but I can't tell you what that would be in electric terms.

Then why did you use a 60?

Chris,
I fly a similar size plane with a 3520/10 980Kv on 4s 4400mah Thunderpower batteries using a Alan's carbon 3 blade prop both 12x6 and 11x5.5. I am using only about 70% of the battery per flight. You cannot go wrong running a cobra 3520.

Thanks MM, Randy and Joe.
So, Joe, I'm wondering if I drop the kv rating, sticking with either the 3520, or even dropping to the 3515, and choose a 5S pack, maybe less capacity, what the difference would be?
I know that W=A x V, so in theory, the same wattage can be had (enough to pull the plane well) by using a lower kv rated motor, and probably the same weight battery, with more cells, less capacity....
But, the question comes down to, "What will be the advantage or disadvantage, really, what will be the difference in the system"?
My gut says that a higher voltage system may be more efficient and produce less heat? A lower rated esc might also weigh less and be smaller and still run the system.

I wonder, I'm sure someone has used a higher kv motor on 4S, svc the same motor with a lower kv on 5S; I would love to hear their impression of this in the same plane.

R,
Chris

Chris,
Yes, if you go to a 5s system, you will use less mah's because of the higher voltage and your amps will go down. With 5s and 6s batteries you may be able to get a little lighter battery because you lower the amps used.
I have mostly 4s systems because that is what I started with and most of my planes use the same size battery and the cost is a little cheaper for 4s then 5s and 6s.
I have both of the size cobra motors you mention and the 3515 pulls a 60 oz plane around with no issue and the 3520 pulls a 69 oz plane around with no issue and they both run cool.

Thanks Joe.
Sounds like the 3515 is enough motor if I can keep the build light....
Happy Thanksgiving all.

You'd definitely want less capacity -- all else being equal* you'll use 4/5 as much capacity from a 5-cell pack as a 4-cell pack.

Whatever else you do, if you find yourself stuck juggling numbers and never actually progressing**, just pick a combination and run with it because anything is better than nothing.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Hahaha, I'm good with a laugh this morning, Tim, thanks.
You're right though, it's not worth nit picking every last detail (unless you're me? LOL).
I have several suggestions above, I'm sure any of which will work fine...
I'll be better equipped to make a decision when I open the box and start building. I did learn a few things on the ARF I put together, and will surely apply the info learned to this project when it's started.
Stiletto is a sexy beast....
